New York City, NY – Gallery Henoch, located in the heart of Chelsea, is delighted to announce a special exhibition showcasing the evocative paintings of Alexandra Pacula. The grand opening took place on Thursday, September 14 and will run through October 7, 2023, from 6-8 pm.
Born in Poland, Pacula’s early experiences were marked by the serene nights of her homeland. However, her relocation to the United States at the age of 14 introduced her to the dazzling grandeur of Manhattan’s skyline. This juxtaposition sparked a deep-rooted passion in Pacula, driving her to explore the dynamic interplay of light within the urban landscape. Her works, however, are not mere cityscapes; they are vibrant interpretations that pulsate with the city’s energy.
A hallmark of Pacula’s art is her masterful use of light. Pieces like “Zenith” present skyscrapers and urban scenes bathed in a choreographed dance of light, color, and form, reminiscent of time-lapse imagery. Esteemed art critic Donald Kuspit draws parallels between her work and music, noting the harmonious blend of dots, dashes, and lines that seem to move across her canvases, capturing the essence of a city in motion.
While many of Pacula’s paintings provide a panoramic view of the city, a select few delve into the intimate spaces of its residents. These pieces offer a glimpse into the personal worlds that exist within the vast urban expanse, inviting viewers to share in Pacula’s enchantment with city life.
Speaking about the exhibition, Pacula said “Zenith as a piece, is to show the verticality of the city, create a composition that would portray the soaring height of the buildings and at the same time create a dynamic light and dark composition. I was trying to keep the light dynamic yet organized into simple shapes.”

“The second piece, Shimmering Twilight, is about capturing the evening light in the city, after the sunset when the blue of the sky casts the city in an azure glow. In all of my work I translate the lights of the city with paint into abstract shapes that are arranged to create familiar yet fantastical scenes.”
Gallery Henoch is conveniently located at 555 West 25th St. (between 10th and 11th Ave). For those commuting, the C or E subway lines to 23rd St. are recommended. The man behind this esteemed establishment, George Henoch Shechtman, has been an influential figure in New York City’s art scene since 1966. A Rutgers University alumnus, Shechtman embarked on his journey as an art dealer with the inauguration of the Christopher Street Gallery in the heart of Greenwich Village in 1966. Adapting to the city’s ever-evolving art landscape, the gallery transitioned to Madison Avenue in the early ’70s, rebranding as Christopher Gallery. By 1982, with the art pulse moving to Soho, Shechtman established Gallery Henoch on Wooster Street. Recognizing the shift of the art epicenter to Chelsea, the gallery found its current home on 25th Street in 2000.
