Philadelphia, PA – The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (Penn Museum) is set to host a groundbreaking exhibition titled “Liminality: Wanderlust and Nostalgia in the New Era.” Opening in November this year, this innovative showcase will feature works by internationally renowned contemporary artist Hongtao Sun alongside other distinguished artists.
The exhibition, a collaborative effort between New York-based VSDesign, DesignPhiladelphia, and ALT Alliance, aims to explore the intersections of traditional artistry and contemporary themes. Hongtao Sun, a prominent advocate of new ink painting and marker art, is expected to play a central role in the exhibition, bringing his unique perspective on cultural heritage and modern expression to American audiences.
Sun’s participation is particularly significant given his impressive credentials. He currently serves as the Executive Vice Chairman of the Shaanxi Provincial Literature and Art Promotion Association and Vice President of the Shaanxi Contemporary Painting Academy. Sun holds the title of National Second-Class Artist in China and is a member of several prestigious art associations, including the China Artists Association and the China Gongbi Painting Society.
The exhibition will feature two series of Sun’s works: “Shuiyuntu” and “Nature’s Tale,” both created using ink and color on Xuan paper. The “Shuiyuntu” series explores human struggle and the exploratory spirit in the face of an uncertain future, using ocean and cloud imagery to symbolize humanity’s sense of disorientation within the vastness of time and space. The “Nature’s Tale” series depicts expansive prairies, tranquil valleys, and distant mountains, expressing nostalgia and reverence for nature while reflecting on modernity and technological progress.
These works, each measuring 39x65cm, showcase Sun’s mastery of traditional ink techniques combined with modern compositional concepts. They promise to offer visitors a profound exploration of identity, existential meaning, and the human experience in contemporary society.
The Penn Museum, with its rich history dating back to 1887, provides a fitting backdrop for this exploration of time and culture. Spanning over 300,000 square feet and welcoming more than 180,000 visitors annually, the museum’s expansive galleries will offer a unique context for Sun’s contemporary works.
Hongtao Sun’s artistic practice, which focuses on the exploration and innovative expression of new ink painting and marker art, has earned him wide recognition. His works are collected by numerous prestigious institutions in China and internationally, including the National Art Museum of China and museums in France, Japan, Germany, and South Korea.
As the art world continues to grapple with questions of identity, tradition, and progress, this exhibition at the Penn Museum serves as a crucial platform for exploration and understanding. With Hongtao Sun’s innovative ink paintings at the forefront, “Liminality” promises to be a thought-provoking journey through the landscapes of cultural memory and artistic innovation.
To further enrich the experience, the exhibition will include a series of interactive workshops and lectures led by Hongtao Sun and other participating artists. These events aim to engage the audience in deeper discussions about the evolution of traditional art forms in the modern world and the role of cultural heritage in contemporary artistic practices. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to not only view these stunning works of art but also gain insight into the creative processes behind them, making the exhibition a comprehensive exploration of both visual and intellectual dimensions. This addition highlights the Penn Museum’s commitment to fostering a dynamic dialogue between artists and audiences, ensuring that “Liminality” will be a memorable and impactful cultural event.
