Rising Above: The Story of Dr. Dominique Carson H.C

Dr. Dominique M. Carson, LMP (H.C) is an award-winning freelance journalist, licensed massage practitioner, author, and orator who has made significant strides in various fields, earning a stellar reputation for her work. Her impressive portfolio includes contributions to esteemed publications such as Singersroom.com and numerous Brooklyn news media outlets. Carson has interviewed over 100 notable figures in popular culture, including Latto, H.E.R, Coco Jones, SWV, Charlie Wilson, Regina Belle, Patti Labelle, and Kirk Franklin.

Carson’s journey is marked by perseverance and an unyielding commitment to excellence. She collaborated with Brooklyn historian and journalist Suzanne Spellen to launch a 118-page journal on Lefferts Manor, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, showcasing her dedication to preserving local history. Her role as Program and Communications Coordinator for Man Up! Inc., a nonprofit organization in East New York, Brooklyn, further highlights her community involvement. During her tenure, she received a citation from the New York City Council and New York State Assembly and the “It’s My Park Award” from the Partnership for Parks for her community engagement efforts.

In November 2020, Carson published her first solo book, a biography on R&B icon Jon B titled “Jon B: Are You Still Down.” Despite being independently published, the book achieved significant recognition, becoming an Amazon Hot New Release in One Hour Biography and Memoirs Short Reads. It was also featured in Book Authority’s 7 Best New R&B Music Books To Read, Goodreads, and Readers’ Favorite in 2021. This accomplishment underscores Carson’s talent as a biographer and her ability to captivate readers with her storytelling.

A year after the COVID-19 pandemic, Carson participated in the National Women’s History Museum’s journaling project titled “Women Writing History: A Coronavirus Journaling Project.” Her 42-page journal provided a poignant account of how the pandemic impacted her life and career, reflecting her adaptability and resilience in the face of unprecedented challenges.

Carson’s academic achievements are equally impressive. She graduated from the City University of New York, Brooklyn College, with both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees before the age of 25, becoming the first African American to receive the Brooklyn College Wall of Fame award in the winter of 2011. Her educational journey did not stop there; in 2019, she obtained an Associate of Applied Science degree and a license in Massage Therapy from CUNY Queensborough Community College. This qualification allows her to practice massage therapy in New York City, 44 other states, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.

Her contributions to the fields of journalism and health and wellness have been recognized with numerous awards. These include the Global Iconic Changemaker Award, The Empowered Woman Award, the Global Recognition Award, the Business Elite Awards 40 under 40 nominee, and 2x Author All-Star. In Spring 2024, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Humanitarianism from the Global International Alliance Advocate University, a testament to her impact and dedication to humanitarian efforts.

Carson’s story is one of triumph over adversity. Growing up in East New York Brooklyn, she overcame a hearing deficiency stemming from the first four years of my life, child sexual abuse, losing a close elementary school friend that was raped and killed when she was 13, losing seven family members by the time she was 25, paternal abandonment, heartache, being bullied by a classmate, broken cracks in the household, lost her high school friends to suicide and a brain aneurysm, one of her male friends from childhood life spiraled after recreational drug use,  being teased by extended family, neglect from a teacher while in grammar school, personal biases from educators because she challenged their intellect, unnecessary gossip from grown women in her community, workplace trauma, a near-fatal car accident in February 2023, and lost her dear friend and sister, Alisha “Toya” Owensford to breast cancer in August 2023.

Her life experiences have shaped her into a resilient and determined individual, driven by a purpose to advocate for others and facilitate positive change through her work.

Her dual career as a journalist and licensed massage practitioner reflects her belief in the power of words and touch to heal and inspire. “My mission is to facilitate people’s lives with my hands and words,” Carson explains, encapsulating her holistic approach to her professional endeavors.

Carson’s unique journey and achievements make her a standout figure in her field. Her dedication to her craft, coupled with her unwavering commitment to her community, sets her apart from her competition. Her story is not just one of professional success but also of personal resilience and unwavering determination to make a positive impact.
