Teachers are the foundational pillar of any education system. And unlike what many people believe, their roles stretch much further than simply explaining simple concepts to developing minds. They are also responsible for building confidence, behavior, discipline, and character in their students.

Considering that, teachers are already practicing leadership every day, in many ways. However, the expectations of the current education system, families, and even students for school teachers and leaders have spiked. If we talk about a principal today, they’re not simply an administrator managing the schedule and discipline of the school, but rather, an instructional leader, strategic planner, and culture builder.

This change has made teachers think about how to best prepare themselves for a leadership role in the current education system.

Pathway to Educational Leadership

No teacher becomes a school leader immediately. They grow into those leading roles slowly, usually over a couple of years.

Yes, most teachers’ careers begin in the classroom, where they see familiar young faces every day, teach, and make critical decisions for the benefit of their students. After some time, ambitious teachers will step out of their classroom’s comfort zone and start taking on more responsibility. They might move into roles like department head, instructional coach, or even assistant principal, helping the students, the teachers, and school management run the school efficiently.

As they gain more experience, they move even further, becoming principals of entire schools, or even district-level leaders. Now, what moves the scale up is not simply promotion, but rather transformation. When an educator starts thinking outside of their classroom, they often become candidates for broader leadership responsibility and move up the career ladder.

Core Leadership Skills Every Teacher Must Develop

Not everyone is a leader. Teachers who want to make changes on a more systematic level need some essential leadership skills, such as:

• Instructional Leadership: Schools don’t excel just because of one person. But one person can certainly help create a system that makes the school shine. There are always teachers who focus on their personal teaching excellence, but also try to improve teaching and learning methods throughout the school. Such educators are the real instructional leaders. They are a great help in designing the curriculum, improving teaching methods around the school, and analyzing student performance to guide their decisions.

• Communication Skills: This is non-negotiable for leaders. Communication determines whether a leader is respected or taken for granted. As such, a future educational leader must be able to clearly communicate their expectations to both their staff and students. They must actively listen to other teachers’ concerns and provide feedback that helps them grow. It’s also important for them to be effective at communicating with parents and handle difficult conversations with professionalism. Without these skills, a teacher might be delivering lectures in the classroom until the day they retire.

• Strategic Planning: Every system needs its strategic planners to run smoothly, and education is no exception. While ordinary teachers work to achieve classroom goals, school leaders think more long-term. They identify the problems within their school system and make strategies to overcome them in the best possible way. They also use data to make decisions and align resources where their priorities lie.

• Team Building and Collaboration: If we don’t have team-building skills, we can’t do much even if we are exceptionally good at strategy. A person can’t change the whole system unless they are trusted by their team. School leaders today are increasingly developing professional learning communities (PLCs), and encouraging collaboration between teachers to develop a close-knit staff culture. When teachers and staff are on good terms with each other, and they work towards the same goal, the whole school benefits.

Leadership Development Through Advanced Education

Formal education is still a great way to prepare teachers for leadership positions. Completing advanced education through programs like the Spalding University EdD program can help experienced teachers understand more technical areas of the school system, such as structure, educational policies, data analysis, and school governance.

A lot of leadership development programs also design workshops, supervised placements, or internships to make it easier for aspiring teachers to gain more real-life experience and build their leadership skills.

Practical Ways Teachers Can Gain Leadership Experience Early

Many people think that leadership skills can only be gained after you get that promotion. That’s a well-fed myth in our society. Enterprising educators who want to take on leadership roles don’t wait for promotions. They look for other ways where they can polish their leadership skills long before they get promoted.

There are hundreds of ways to learn leadership skills within or outside your school. For example, teachers can gain informal leadership opportunities within their school. They can mentor new or junior teachers and design lesson resources for them. They can also lead classroom innovation projects or support academic improvement initiatives. All these experiences help build trust with the staff and within the school system.

Besides that, a lot of schools in the US have committees. Joining these can help teachers understand how schools work in reality. Leading extracurricular activities, student initiatives, or academic programs can also help teachers develop organizational and motivational skills.

Challenges in Transition from Teacher to Leader

Taking on leadership roles is not always as easy as it sounds. Professional relationships change within a day. For example, the teachers you were working alongside till yesterday might suddenly see you promoted to a role supervising them. In such scenarios, you must have emotional intelligence and good communication skills to keep everyone happy.

Another challenge is the increase in responsibility. As a leader, you’re no longer responsible for a single class. You need to think on a wider scale, which means you need to manage conflicts, make difficult decisions, and sometimes enforce policies that will make many students and staff unhappy but are necessary.

Despite the challenges, it’s no secret that leadership roles have their appeal. They help educators make changes in the educational system that prove beneficial for the teaching staff and for students.

Taking on a leadership role as a teacher is not only about attaining the spoils of a promotion. It also comes down to being able to develop the necessary skills and experience, trusting our drive and ambition, and having a genuine willingness to take on additional responsibility. At the end of the day, the teachers who make the best leaders stay connected to teaching and are passionate about striving for better education for their students.

How AI Infrastructure Lets Voice Tech Understand Speech Impairments

For millions of Americans, voice assistants are a daily convenience. Setting alarms, sending messages, controlling smart home devices, searching for information, all done by speaking. The technology works so smoothly for most users that it is easy to forget it does not work for everyone.

For individuals with dysarthria, a motor speech disorder caused by neurological conditions including stroke, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), these same tools are often a source of frustration. Their speech may sound slurred, slow, or difficult to understand. Standard voice recognition models, trained primarily on typical speech patterns, fail to interpret these voices accurately. Commands are ignored. Messages go undictated. A tool designed for convenience becomes a barrier.

The numbers are significant. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, roughly 5% of U.S. children have speech disorders, with rates reaching 8–9% among young children. For adults with specific neurological conditions, the impact is even more pronounced. According to Motor Speech Disorders: Substrates, Differential Diagnosis, and Management, an estimated 70% of Parkinson’s disease patients, 30% of stroke survivors, and nearly all individuals living with advanced ALS develop speech impairments tied to their conditions. These figures represent millions of Americans whose daily communication is compromised.

In practical terms, this means a stroke survivor cannot use voice commands to call for help. A person with cerebral palsy cannot dictate a message to family members. A Parkinson’s patient cannot search the web hands-free. As voice technology becomes more embedded in daily life, those with speech differences find themselves increasingly excluded from a world that has grown accustomed to talking to its devices.

The difficulty is not merely a matter of data. Standard voice activity detection systems, the tools that determine when speech starts and stops, are built around typical speech patterns. Dysarthric speech, which is characterized by highly variable acoustic features and inconsistent articulation, falls far outside these systems’ operational parameters. Even when speech is detected, recognition accuracy drops significantly. The technical gap is a persistent barrier to making voice technology accessible to all.

This is the problem that software engineer Ke Shao set out to address. While researchers develop novel algorithms, Shao’s work focuses on the systems that make those algorithms reliable, fast, and deployable at scale, work that spans the speech pipeline, the compatibility layer, and the monitoring and stability engineering that determine whether a model ever leaves the lab and reaches real users.

Shao’s work on voice accessibility centered on supporting the launch of a dysarthric recognizer, a specialized speech recognition system designed to understand non-standard speech patterns. His responsibility was to build the critical infrastructure that connects the recognizer front-end to backend model hosting servers, a process known as building the speech pipeline. This pipeline does more than route data. It handles variable input formats, manages model versioning for continuous updates, and routes each user’s speech to the appropriate model variants, ensuring that the recognizer can adapt to the wide diversity of dysarthric speech patterns without service interruption.

The technical work was substantial. Unlike typical speech, which follows relatively predictable acoustic patterns, dysarthric speech varies widely across individuals. The same person may produce different sounds on different days depending on their physical condition. A solution that works for one user may fail for another.

Shao led the effort to design and deploy a complete infrastructure for the recognizer. This involved several key components: making the recognizer compatible with the company’s existing infrastructure, building a reliable pipeline that routes speech from front-end modules to backend servers, conducting large-scale stability testing, and optimizing for latency to ensure responses arrive within acceptable time frames even under heavy user loads.

The work required deep engagement with the production environment. Researchers build models; engineers like Shao make them run. He played a central role in the deployment pipeline, ensuring that the recognizer could be reliably updated, monitored, and maintained in production. He implemented testing protocols to validate performance across diverse usage scenarios and developed monitoring systems to track service health in real time.

The dysarthric recognizer deployed successfully. The infrastructure Shao built now supports a service that makes functional voice technology available to a community that has long been excluded. For individuals with ALS, stroke survivors, and others with speech differences, the recognizer opens doors: dictating messages, issuing voice commands, controlling smart home devices. These are activities that most people take for granted.

For Shao, the project reinforced a core conviction. Advanced AI models create meaningful public value only when supported by mature, scalable infrastructure. Research breakthroughs attract attention, but the real work of making technology accessible happens in the details of deployment, in compatibility testing, latency optimization, monitoring systems, and stability engineering. These are the tasks that determine whether a model helps anyone at all.

The dysarthric recognizer is not perfect. Accuracy for atypical speech still lags behind typical speech. But the gap is narrowing. Each step forward in infrastructure, data collection, and model training moves the technology closer to a simple but important goal, ensuring that when someone speaks to a machine, the machine listens, no matter how they sound.

Shao continues his work on large-scale AI infrastructure, refining the stability and universality of voice intelligence systems. The dysarthric recognizer was one project among many, but it exemplifies his broader engineering philosophy. Persistent, detail-oriented infrastructure work is essential to making AI serve all members of society.

In the end, the value of this work is not measured in compute hours or latency benchmarks. It is measured in the people who can now use their voices to interact with the world around them. That is what engineering is for.

From Non-Major Dance Classrooms to Cross-Cultural Stages, Huang Xiaoxia’s Dance Education Practice

At Tsinghua University, a comprehensive research university in China, most students in dance classes have not received formal professional dance training. They often arrive from laboratories, libraries, or academic lecture halls, beginning to use their bodies to understand music, space, and one another. Since joining the Art Education Center at Tsinghua University in 2012, dance educator and choreographer Huang Xiaoxia has developed multiple practice-based dance courses open to the entire university, and her teaching evaluations have been consistently strong. Working with students from diverse academic backgrounds and varying levels of physical training, she adjusts between artistic standards and individual pacing, guiding students to set aside concerns about whether they are “dancing correctly” and to learn expression and collaboration through practice. Trust and rapport between teacher and students gradually develop through shared exploration and rehearsal.

In 2017, Huang Xiaoxia’s original modern dance work Breakthrough brought these non-dance-major students onto a formal stage. Over several months of rehearsal, students balanced demanding academic workloads and experienced moments of difficulty, with some considering withdrawal. Huang Xiaoxia accompanied them through repeated rehearsals, refining the work while helping them rebuild confidence in themselves, their peers, and the stage. The work ultimately received the Gold Award and Outstanding Choreography Award at the Beijing College Student Dance Festival, a dance competition for university students in Beijing. For these students without professional training, beyond the competition results, the process of overcoming anxiety, trusting one another, and completing the work together became a lasting and significant part of the experience.

Four years later, Chasing the Light Across the Vast Sea brought this course-based practice to a more professional performance environment. The work received the Gold Award in the Contemporary Dance General Group A at the Beijing College Student Dance Festival, as well as the Second Prize for Choreography and the Second Prize for Performance at the 17th Beijing Dance Competition. At the award ceremony, Huang Xiaoxia’s non-dance-major students performed alongside works from university high-level arts troupes and professional dance companies.

In 2023, The Untamed Vitality of Life received the Gold Award and Outstanding Choreography Award at the Beijing College Student Dance Festival, and Huang Xiaoxia received the Best Choreography Award and Outstanding Instructor Award. The work subsequently received the Third Prize in the Mass Culture Youth Group category at the 18th Beijing Dance Competition. The competition received a total of 627 submissions, of which 131 advanced to the final judging round. The Beijing Dancers Association, one of the competition’s organizers, noted in its post-competition coverage that the work presented the vitality of life through variations in breath, movement, and formation. To date, Breakthrough, Chasing the Light Across the Vast Sea, and The Untamed Vitality of Life, all choreographed and directed by Huang Xiaoxia, have each received Gold Awards at the Beijing College Student Dance Festival in 2017, 2021, and 2023, respectively. For the students involved, the trust, sense of responsibility, and courage to express themselves developed through rehearsal are equally lasting outcomes of these works.

Huang Xiaoxia’s teaching methodology, initially developed at Tsinghua for university students without professional dance training, has been further examined in cross-cultural contexts through her graduate studies in the Dance Education program at New York University. In Spring 2026, her original modern dance work Space Becomes Infinite was selected for the 2026 Masters Dance Concert and performed at New York University’s Frederick Loewe Theatre. The work, performed by eight dancers from diverse cultural and training backgrounds, explored themes of distance, memory, loss, and emotional preservation. Confronted with differences among the dancers in movement interpretation, training habits, and emotional expression, Huang Xiaoxia established shared understanding through communication and rehearsal adjustments while preserving each dancer’s individual physical characteristics.

The creative process of Space Becomes Infinite also received feedback from members of New York’s dance community. American postmodern dancer and choreographer Douglas Dunn provided feedback after observing rehearsals. Deborah Damast, Director of the Dance Education program at New York University, also shared her observations on the work.

In New York, Huang Xiaoxia also collaborated with dancer and dance educator Joyce Lao. Together, they co-choreographed Breath to Breath, which was featured on Ally Artists’ “Dance and Choreography” platform, using breath to connect Chinese physical practices, Filipino Indigenous dance, and experimental contemporary dance. Subsequently, she participated as a featured performer and choreographic collaborator in Lao’s SUNGOD (Destiny). This work, integrating film, dance, and music and drawing from Ibaloi and Igorot cultural traditions, was performed at the Evolution Festival in New York on June 28, 2026. Published performance listings for the festival credited Huang Xiaoxia among the work’s guest performers and choreographers.

Huang Xiaoxia’s work bridges two distinct learning and creative environments. One is the university classroom, filled with students who arrive without any formal dance background. The other is a set of creative spaces in New York where training systems and cultural experiences vary widely. She continues to pursue dance education research and cross-cultural creative work in New York, connecting teaching, rehearsal, and performance as an ongoing educational practice.
