In November 2024, New York hosted the 2024 PSO Northeast & After Dark Pole Championships, highlighting the mesmerizing blend of athleticism and artistry in pole sports. Held on November 16, it brought together participants and spectators from across the globe to celebrate this unique discipline.  

Against this backdrop, we spoke with Marta Zadorozhna, a leading figure in the pole sports world. Hailing from Ukraine, Marta has achieved international acclaim as both an athlete and a coach, and she’s now setting her sights on expanding her impact in the United States.  

Marta, can you tell us about your beginnings in pole sports?

“It all started as a hobby,” Marta recalls smiling. “I studied law at the National Academy of Internal Affairs in Kyiv, looking for a creative outlet from my rigorous coursework. Pole dancing initially offered me a form of self-expression, but over time, I realized it was more than just an activity. It’s an art form requiring strength, flexibility, and creativity. Within months, it became a core part of my life.”  

Her first year of training was marked by intense learning and self-discovery. “Back then, I had no idea I’d reach the heights I have today. My initial successes in local competitions in Ukraine gave me the confidence to pursue pole sports on a larger scale,” she says.  

What was your first big breakthrough?

“The turning point came in 2016 when I won the ‘Spring 2016’ championship in Kharkiv,” Marta explains. “It marked the beginning of my professional journey. Soon after, I started competing internationally, earning awards at events like the Lithuanian championship. But the highlight of my career so far was winning the ‘Pole Dance Showdown 2021,’ where I scored a record-breaking 97 out of 100 points.”  

For Marta, every performance is more than just a series of technical moves. “Each routine is a story,” she says. “I aim to inspire audiences and show the emotional depth of pole sports.”  

You’re also a coach. What do you find most rewarding about working with students?

“Coaching allows me to help others unlock their potential,” Marta shares. “One of my proudest moments was seeing my student, Sofia Goncharova, win first place at the 2020 IPSF World Championship. I’ve also developed a program called ‘Pole Fusion for Youth,’ which focuses on building strength, flexibility, and confidence in young athletes.”

Her coaching philosophy emphasizes individuality. “Every student is unique,” Marta notes. “My job is to highlight their strengths and build their confidence. Technical skills are important, but so is psychological preparation. Confidence is key to success.”  

What are some of your professional milestones? 

“In 2018, I earned my Level 2 IPSF judge certification, joining the ranks of international pole sports judges,” Marta says. “I’ve judged major tournaments like Pole Art Ukraine and IPSF championships, which has been a rewarding way to contribute to the sport.”  

Marta is also a pioneer in education. “I co-authored online courses for coaches and created unique training programs like ‘Harmony of Movement’ and ‘Creative Flow.’ These methods help athletes improve their physical skills while fostering creativity,” she explains. “Seeing my students succeed on the global stage is incredibly fulfilling.”  

Why are you focusing on the U.S. now?  

“Pole sports are growing rapidly in America,” Marta says. “This is an exciting time to be involved. My goal is to open a training center, organize competitions, and build a community that celebrates the art and athleticism of pole sports.”  

For Marta, it’s about more than just the sport. “I want to inspire young people and help them realize their potential,” she adds. “Creating opportunities for others is what drives me.”  

What projects do you plan to launch in the U.S.?

“I’m planning to open a studio where I’ll train both beginners and advanced athletes,” Marta shares. “I also want to host masterclasses with international experts, organize regional and national competitions, and represent the U.S. at global events.”  

Education is another key focus. “I aim to popularize pole sports through specialized courses and youth programs,” she says. “Supporting emerging talent is essential for the growth of this discipline.”  

Looking back, what advice would you give your younger self? 

“Never doubt yourself,” Marta says with conviction. “My journey has taught me to believe in my abilities and stay open to new opportunities. Passion and hard work will always lead to success.”  

What do you hope to change about the perception of pole sports?

“Pole sports are often misunderstood,” Marta admits. “I want to break stereotypes and show that it’s a complex, artistic, and physically demanding discipline.”  

She’s already made strides in changing perceptions through media coverage in Ukrainian outlets like ‘Nash Den’ and ‘Tsikava Gazeta na Vykhidni.’ “But I believe the U.S. has even greater potential for embracing pole sports,” she says.  

What keeps you motivated?

“My students inspire me,” Marta says. “Watching them grow, gain confidence, and achieve their goals is incredibly rewarding. I also believe in pole sports’ power to unite people and bridge cultural divides.”
