This moment was especially sweet and gratifying since I helped get Jon his first deal 10 years prior,” Beer shares.

Super Lawyer Beer, recently named to the 2024 New York Super Lawyers list, recalls recognizing Batiste’s talents as an artist and performer in the early years of his career, encouraging him to fulfill his dreams and challenge himself to do things outside his comfort zone. 

“I told Jon consistently that what he needs to do is become a band leader, to do what Questlove did with Fallon, and so we put our feelers out there.” At this point, Beer convinced Batiste’s manager to get him a guest performance on the Stephen Colbert Show, which eventually became a regular gig. Before Colbert, Beer assisted with Batiste’s breakthrough performance at the Sundance Film Festival’s ASCAP Lounge, saying that’s “what really lit the fuse,” he can’t help but feel proud of the journey he and Batiste have shared.

Beer shares that about 20 years ago, he represented a group called No Secrets through Jive Records, which was required to replace one of the two lead singers in the group in a very short period. With less than 60 days to find a replacement, Beer held auditions in his “law office turned talent management office,” and eventually came across a girl named Stefani Germanotta. 

“She was a junior in high school with messy hair and ripped jeans. The other girls who auditioned were more ‘polished’, but I loved how she sang and was especially impressed when she sat down with the keyboard,” he reflects.

Aware that Stefani didn’t fit the mold of what No Secret’s producers were looking for, Beer secured her an audition. “She had a wonderful audition with the label, but after she left, the head of A&R told me, ‘She has a theatrical vocal style, not well suited for a pop artist,’ and ‘Are you sure she’s the right girl? Her voice is too big.’”

“I pushed back and said to him, ‘That’s like saying Freddie Mercury can’t sing pop because he had a theatrical voice.’ Stephanie could sing pop easily. Then the A&R guy leaned in closer and said, ‘Well, she doesn’t look like the other girls.’ I said, ‘You’re right. She’s more interesting.’”

“I remember thinking that sometimes you don’t need another ‘the same.’ You need someone that comes in and has a little flair,” he says. “I trusted my instincts, and I knew she was different. She had too much talent to ignore.” Eventually, with Beer’s help, Stephanie got a spot in the group, but after seven months passed, the label dropped the No Secret. 

“Four years later, she changed her name to Lady Gaga,” he says. 

Acknowledging that the road to fame will always come with things out of one’s control, Beer shares that you just have to “lean into it and do the best job you can.” As an attorney to countless clients spanning his time as an attorney, he emphasizes the need to get creative when navigating the ever-changing entertainment landscape—and the importance of fighting for talented artists, even when others don’t recognize it.

“With all my clients, I prioritize their agenda, not mine. What’s their goal? What’s their objective? What does success look like to them? For me, it’s talking about it, understanding it, and taking a holistic approach that doesn’t just rubber stamp but challenges them. And if they’re missing an important element, it’s suggesting some things for them to think about,” he explains.

Not “just a conventional lawyer,” Beer describes himself as a problem solver, business developer, and counselor” (not to mention a Father of three sons) dedicated to building the foundation for his client’s success.

“I don’t think anyone has had the journey that I’ve had, learned as much as I’ve learned, or impacted careers and businesses through my experiences,” he concludes.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) have long been key priorities for many organizations, yet the gap in representation, particularly for Black women in senior leadership and executive roles, remains considerable. Despite companies publicly committing to fostering an inclusive culture, Black women in corporate America still face substantial barriers that hinder their professional advancement. These challenges are deeply rooted in racial and gender biases, limiting career growth and curtailing opportunities for Black women to assume roles as senior leaders or executives.

 

While many corporations emphasize DEI, the impact of this commitment on organizational structures and outcomes often falls short. Research highlights that Black women are disproportionately affected by misconceptions and biases that relate to both their race and gender, placing them at a unique disadvantage in corporate settings. Unlike their White and non-Black peers, Black women face barriers linked to stereotypical perceptions, cultural expressions, and natural hair choices, which are frequently seen as “unprofessional” or “too bold.” Moreover, their assertiveness or confidence, often viewed positively by others, is sometimes misconstrued as aggressive or intimidating in Black women, creating additional challenges for those navigating corporate leadership roles.

 

Dr. LaTonya Stewart, a social justice advocate and expert in organizational leadership, has focused her career on addressing these disparities. Growing up in the Midwest, she encountered racial biases firsthand, which fueled her passion for equity and ultimately led her to become an influential scholar and consultant in DEI. Recently earning her Doctorate in Leadership for Organizations (Ed.D.) from the University of Dayton, Dr. Stewart’s dissertation centered on the experiences of Black women leaders within corporate environments, aiming to expose the nuanced barriers they face and to foster change.

 

Through her study, Dr. Stewart employed Critical Action Research, drawing on a sequential mixed-methods approach to examine the corporate journeys of Black women leaders across the United States. This approach allowed her to contextualize these experiences within national and local Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) data and investigate Black women’s challenges when striving to advance in organizations that champion inclusion, diversity, and equity (IDE). The data revealed a pronounced discrepancy: despite DEI initiatives, Black women remain significantly underrepresented in senior roles.

 

Dr. Stewart’s findings point to an urgent need for meaningful DEI practices that go beyond surface-level initiatives. Her action plan emphasizes two primary objectives:

 

  • Increasing Recruitment and Retention of Black Talent: Addressing the lack of Black talent in leadership requires proactive measures in recruitment and retention. Dr. Stewart’s strategy includes targeted recruitment programs to attract qualified Black professionals and foster a supportive environment that encourages long-term growth and retention.
  • Creating Opportunities for Career Advancement: A critical part of DEI involves recruiting Black talent and ensuring they have clear, equitable pathways to progress. Dr. Stewart’s plan highlights the need for mentorship programs, professional development resources, and structured career advancement opportunities that empower Black women to ascend into leadership roles. By implementing these changes, organizations can foster a culture of true inclusivity, where Black women have equal opportunities to thrive.

Engaging openly and transparently about DEI challenges can help dismantle harmful stereotypes and foster a workplace that values diversity in all its forms.

 

Looking ahead, Dr. Stewart is committed to partnering with corporations and marketing her strategic plan to CEOs, senior leaders, and DEI professionals. She aims to bridge the racial disparity gap by promoting policies that dismantle racial biases, encourage transparency, and create safe spaces for Black women in the workplace. She recognizes the challenges inherent in addressing race and equity within corporate settings, which can be sensitive topics that provoke discomfort or resistance. However, Dr. Stewart remains steadfast in her mission, grounded in her purpose-driven approach: “The POWER within must be ignited by PASSION and Driven by PURPOSE.”

 

Her message is timely and impactful, underscoring the importance of genuine commitment to DEI initiatives that yield measurable results. Organizations willing to engage in self-reflection and actively pursue these goals can create a ripple effect, enhancing diversity within their ranks and contributing to a broader societal shift toward equity. By fostering inclusive cultures, corporations can drive social change, empower underrepresented voices, and cultivate environments where Black women and other marginalized groups can excel.

But what drives this concerning trend? Let’s take a look at the factors contributing to Miami’s high accident rate.

1. Dense Population and Congestion

Miami-Dade County boasts a population of over 2.7 million residents, making it one of the most densely populated areas in the country. This density translates to heavy traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours and tourist seasons. More cars on the road increase the likelihood of accidents, especially when combined with aggressive driving behaviors.

2. Tourist Traffic

Miami is a major tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors annually. Many tourists are unfamiliar with the city’s roads, traffic patterns, and local driving habits. This unfamiliarity can lead to confusion, hesitation, and, ultimately, accidents.

3. Aggressive Driving

Author and mental health advocate Ann Russo recently appeared on The Whole View podcast with Stacey Toth to discuss the profound impact of affirming care and the urgent need to combat the harmful effects of conversion therapy. 

As a mental health professional with over two decades of experience, Ann specializes in supporting LGBTQ+ individuals and those navigating the intersections of religion, sexuality, and identity. Her insights during the podcast offered a compelling look into the power of affirming care, the devastation wrought by conversion efforts, and the importance of embracing humanity with compassion.

Understanding Affirming Care: A Path to Healing and Growth

At the heart of Ann’s approach is the concept of affirming care, which she describes as a compassionate and supportive framework for individuals exploring their identities. 

“Affirming care is about being with someone through their experience,” Ann explained. “It’s about providing a safe space for them to process and understand themselves, free from judgment.”

Ann emphasized that affirming care is often misunderstood, stating that it shouldn’t mean rushing into medical interventions. It should instead be about offering spaces where individuals “can explore their feelings, thoughts, and experiences with the guidance of mental health professionals.” 

By addressing the misinformation surrounding affirming care, Ann highlighted its critical role in fostering mental well-being and reducing the harm caused by societal rejection.

Conversion Efforts: Torture, Not Therapy

One of the most powerful moments of the podcast came when Ann shed light on the realities of conversion therapy, which she unequivocally labeled as “conversion torture.” She described the physical and psychological harm inflicted on individuals through practices designed to suppress their identities. 

“It’s far beyond therapy,” Ann said. “We’re talking about physical torture—shocking genitals, administering drugs to induce vomiting at the sight of same-sex attraction, and other methods designed to break a person’s sense of self.”

Ann’s condemnation of these practices was backed by sobering statistics. Studies have shown that LGBTQ+ individuals subjected to conversion therapy are three times more likely to attempt suicide. 

“How can someone walk away from that and feel good about themselves?” Ann asked. “These practices don’t change who people are; they inflict trauma that lasts a lifetime.”

Recognizing the Humanity in Everyone

Throughout the conversation, Ann emphasized the importance of recognizing that members of the LGBTQ+ community are, ultimately, human and should therefore be treated as such. She expressed her confusion towards individuals who are so blinded by their bias and hate, they fail to recognize this.

“This is a human being,” Ann pointed out. “Your actions—whether intentional or not—can harm them. You may be denying someone work, healthcare, or even a home. Please help me understand what you gain from that. Removing other people’s ability to access basic needs isn’t just wrong; it’s dehumanizing.”

Ann’s words underscored the urgency of dismantling systemic barriers and challenging prejudices that perpetuate harm. By fostering empathy and understanding, she believes society can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all individuals.

Leading with Love: A Simple Yet Powerful Mantra

As the conversation drew to a close, Ann left listeners with a profound call to action: “Lead with love.” 

She elaborated on the significance of this guiding principle, explaining how small, everyday acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference. “Respect people. Smile at them. Ask how they’re doing and truly listen to their responses,” Ann said. “These seemingly simple actions build connection and show people that they matter.”
