​​SOMOS Community Care was honored at the 67th Annual NY Emmy® Awards, winning in the Religion category for “Benedict XVI: In Honor of the Truth” on October 28th in New York City

Rome Reports, an independent television organization, worked with TV2000, the Joseph Ratzinger Vatican Foundation, and Dr. Ramon Tallaj and Anel Pla. The documentary was sponsored by the Dr Ramon Tallaj Foundation. Dr Tallaj is also the chairman of SOMOS Community Care, one of the largest nonprofit physician-led networks in New York City, serving nearly one million Medicaid patients from the city’s most marginalized communities.  The documentary has versions in Italian, Spanish, and English and has been distributed in more than ten countries.

Somos Founder and Chairman Dr. Ramón Tallaj accepted the award with these heartfelt words: 

First of all, thank you to the Academy for this honor. We dedicate this award to all the employees of SOMOS Community Care. Most importantly, we look forward to a time when peace may return to this world and understanding among human beings—regardless of their religion—can arise again. Amen.” 

From April 19, 2005, until his departure on February 28, 2013, Pope Benedict XVI, the documentary’s subject, was as both the head of the Catholic Church and the ruler of Vatican City State. On December 31, 2022, he passed away. The 48-minute video focuses on Pope Benedict XVI’s teachings and legacy. As the first Pope to announce his resignation in 700 years, it aims to address the issue that many people have about why he resigned five years ago. Was it the butler stealing the Pope’s private documents or the priests’ cases coming to light? 

The answers are disclosed by examining records in the Vatican archives and speaking with close associates of Ratzinger who were there at the most important events in the pope’s life. These include Cardinal Cristoph Schönborn and his deputy Stephen Horn, Ratzinger’s brother Georg Ratzinger, the former Holy See spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi, and other close associates.

The goal is to engage with gifted young people from low socioeconomic backgrounds to assist in the training of doctors, general surgeons, and other healthcare-related professions, all while being inspired by the spirit of founder Dr. Ramon Tallaj and his social vision of the medical profession.
