Self-Sustaining Your Future in Fitness

By: Oscar Lang

OviPhysiques is a brand for fitness lovers and haters alike. If you’re a fitness hater, it’s likely because of the pervasive negativity around losing weight, getting in shape, and how to manifest confidence from a gym life. If you love fitness, you will appreciate a smart and scientific approach to personal training and body transformation.

Ovi Ilica, the founder of OviPhysiques, embarked on this journey to offer a sustainable approach to health and wellness. His foray into fitness was not a result of personal weight struggles, but a deep understanding of the discomfort of being in one’s own skin. This personal journey forms the core philosophy of OviPhysiques-that confidence is an internal process, and health goals are about self-understanding, not rigid diets or extreme workouts. Ovi’s focus is on long-term, sustainable habits over short-term gains.

Ovi was inspired to create OviPhysiques after encountering overwhelming conflicting information in the health and fitness world. Many people need clarification about what to eat, how to exercise, and how often to do it. Ovi recognized that these challenges could be overwhelming and wanted to create a brand to help people navigate through the noise. OviPhysiques encourages individuals to use their strengths to make better choices rather than bull riding every client’s guilt complex and insecurities to push for immediate changes. He wants to empower clients, helping them to feel more in control of their health and wellness journey.

Ovi’s career has been a testament to resilience and adaptability. He faced significant challenges, including being laid off from his job twice. The first time, he experienced feelings of loss, anger, and depression. However, the second time, he channeled his passion for fitness into something positive. He established an LLC, became a certified personal trainer and nutrition specialist, and started working for himself. This experience taught Ovi the importance of resilience and adaptability, which are now core values of OviPhysiques.

Ovi sets his brand apart with a serious commitment to understanding his clients’ unique situations. He loves his work and finds it faulty to impose his beliefs or dietary habits on his clients. Instead, he dives deep into understanding why clients have not succeeded in the past and helps them find a path to consistent success in the future. Humans are engineered to echo their strengths, and he encourages clients to understand and utilize their strengths. For example, if you’re an early riser, that’s an excellent strength to keep up a gym routine. If you’re not, it’s okay, and maybe you have the strength to be into sports—that’s free cardio! His personalized approach ensures that each client feels supported and understood, making their journey towards health and wellness a truly empowering experience.

Ovi’s career highlights depict his dedication and expertise in the fitness industry. He has competed in seven Men’s Physique bodybuilding shows, including the NPC Nationals, and he’s coached over 7,500 classes for Orangetheory Fitness as a dual head coach and regional manager. Through these classes, he’s upped his mastery of a long-term fitness program and changed peoples’ lives. All this time, he feels that he hasn’t worked a day. His talent has been recognized on The Box Entrepreneur TV Show, and he has been responsible for hundreds of transformations and over 800 written fitness programs.

At the core of OviPhysiques is a focus on nutritional habits and creating a structure for success. Ovi does not dictate what foods are ‘good’ or ‘bad’; that doesn’t play into the person-to-person nuances of fitness. He sticks with the positive, emphasizing the need to eat above all else. “EAT THE FOOD,” he exclaims to clients who would set themselves up for failure by starving themselves on a fad diet.  When people eat the right amount of food and get proper nutrition, achieving their health goals becomes much easier. This simple yet powerful message is at the heart of OviPhysiques, where the focus is on helping clients to understand the importance of proper nutrition and how it can lead to incredible results.

OviPhysiques is developing into a brand that includes multiple coaches dedicated to assisting clients. Ovi wants to create a team of coaches who truly care about their clients’ success, making even the unsure client feel more confident, energetic, and overall better for having worked hard towards their goals. He also hopes to show his son that it is possible to do what you love, make a good living, and change lives in the process.

He’s a family man, and his job is just another way to connect better with his family because it’s what he’s passionate about. OviPhysiques is built on the belief that people are capable of amazing things. Ovi wants his clients to know that they can reach any fitness goal they set their minds to, and he emphasizes that motivation alone is not enough to achieve success; real habits and consistency are the keys to realizing the confidence that comes in the weightroom. Through his unique approach and dedication to his clients, Ovi is helping people to build a healthier, more confident future.

Drums, Strings, and Navy Dedication

Oftentimes, there is a pressure in the music industry to be “unique”, even though it’s not clarified in any sense. A lot of musicians will get completely lost in anxiety about becoming “unique”, as if that’s how it works anyways. For Marc and Matt Hansen of Electric Mud, the feeling of music is more important than the pressure of being inexplicably different from everyone else; it’s why they keep a classic rock and roll sound, and it’s why their concerts ring with a genuine joy instead of phony experimentalism. For over a decade, the band has been giving you rock and roll from the keys, strings, drums, and vocal cords of its five members, and they’re only getting better gigs.

Marc and Matty grew up together in Staten Island. They began the band after transferral to a Navy base in San Diego, where they were stationed together in the Navy. They found solace, connection, and excitement when playing at bars amidst the rigors of military life. Matty, the older brother, was the driving force that got the original members of Electric Mud in the same room. He had a vision, an instinct that something special would happen if they could just get together and play. Marc, despite never being in a band, found himself not only enjoying the process but itching to write songs after jamming with the new bandmates. He remarks that it was “like a drug” to come up with new music for them to play. Today, the band consists of Marc and Matt, Colton Cori, Matthew Sorena, and David Stagno. Unfortunately, military life eventually proved more challenging to organize a band around. Marc and Matty often found themselves juggling their duties with rehearsals and performances. On leave, they would sometimes fly the band out to San Diego, playing makeshift gigs in parking lots, or return to New York to perform. These were gritty, low-budget operations, but they were the lifeblood of the band. The experience of serving together, particularly for Marc, who went on to become a Navy SEAL, instilled a level of discipline and resilience that would later prove invaluable in keeping the band together. Don’t get too confused though, low-budget shows are the glory days of any rock band, and the boys loved those bars as much as the bars loved them.

Marc’s time as a SEAL brought a unique perspective to his music. The discipline required to complete such an intense program, and the contrast between the high-stakes world of military operations and the creative process of making music, shaped his approach to the band. This duality of experience—having lived through the extremes of military life while nurturing a creative passion—gives Electric Mud a stylized influence. Going through many shifts of management, they had to maintain their consistency in the long-term by staying in touch, kind, and honest with each other, always ready to get back in the studio and jam.

Electric Mud has always prided itself on being the first to arrive at a venue and the last to leave. They are very professional, and it’s earned them a reputation among venue owners and studio engineers as a band that gets the job done time and time again.  This dedication has paid off in tangible ways. Electric Mud has garnered several accolades over the years, including multiple San Diego Music Awards and the International Singer-Songwriter Association’s Band of the Year. Perhaps the most notable highlight in their career came in May 2023 when they opened for The Rolling Stones during the Hackney Diamonds Tour in Glendale, Arizona. It’s incredible to even be able to say that you jammed and performed alongside such legends.

Electric Mud’s deep rock and roll influence stretches back to the early 20th century with artists like Muddy Waters and Hank Williams. It’s a proud heritage that they can claim a spot on the tapestry of. They never try to reinvent the wheel but rather to keep it turning, ensuring that the music continues to evolve and inspire new generations. Their creative process is organic and deeply collaborative—the name implies as much. When they entered the studio in Portland to record their album “Dangerous Promises,” they leaned into their interpersonal connection as they turned collective ideas into a full studio album. To create something from nothing, to let the music take shape in the moment, is why they all got into music. It’s an approach that has served them well throughout their various lineup changes and the different chapters of their story. One particularly memorable moment occurred during one of Electric Mud’s early jam sessions with Keith Richards. The Rolling Stones guitarist was so into their jams that he started singing along, and when he went to smoke, he sang a light tune about needing a light for his cigarette. This spontaneous moment of creativity in the presence of a great musician led to Marc writing their first song, as well as him wanting to become their lead singer.

Electric Mud has seen success as a band, and they will never give up their big dreams. They want to keep creating music that resonates on a deep level, that inspires others in the same way that they were inspired by the music they grew up with. From Matty and Matthew setting foundations on the drums and base, to the melodies of Colton and David’s keys and guitars, to Marc’s lyrics, they want to increase their cohesion to infinity.

A Look Inside: The Challenges of Professionalism in Medicine

By: Alexey Dombaev

Medicine is not just a job; it’s a calling that demands high levels of focus, resilience, and the ability to make decisions under the most intense conditions. Every day in the life of a healthcare professional is a new challenge where human lives hang in the balance. Behind all the visible aspects – diagnoses, surgeries, and saved lives – lies a vast world of complex decisions, emotional struggles, and immense pressure. What lies behind these constant challenges, and how do those who choose this path cope?

Daily Challenges and Stress

The medical profession is one of the most stressful in the world. Every day, doctors face illnesses, injuries, and the need to make quick and accurate decisions. Anesthesiologists, resuscitation specialists, surgeons, and many others work in environments where even the smallest mistake can have tragic consequences. In such conditions, handling stress and maintaining clarity of thought becomes critically important.

“Challenges test our resilience, and if we can cope with them, we become stronger and more confident in our abilities,” shares Dr. Shariff, an anesthesiologist-reanimatologist. The ability to endure high levels of stress and maintain professionalism is not just a skill but a necessity that every medical professional must develop.

Inner Resilience and Support

Behind the external resilience and professionalism lies an inner strength that doctors develop over the years. “I use mindfulness and stress management techniques to maintain clarity of thought and confidence in my actions, even when the situation seems hopeless,” says Dr. Shariff. Maintaining emotional balance and mental health becomes a critical factor in successful work in a profession where every day brings new challenges.

In addition to personal strategies, a strong support system—colleagues, friends, and family—is crucial for helping doctors navigate challenges. For many professionals, nature and time spent outdoors also serve as vital sources of strength and rejuvenation. “Connecting with nature helps me find harmony and restore my energy during tough times,” shares Dr. Shariff. It is essential to find personal methods for maintaining inner balance to keep both professional competence and human warmth intact.

Continuous Learning and Adaptation

Medicine is a field where change is constant. New technologies, treatment methods, and research require doctors to continuously learn and adapt. “Rather than resisting change, I see it as an opportunity for growth and development,” notes Dr. Shariff. Embracing new technologies and being open to innovation helps doctors tackle current challenges and positions them as leaders in their profession.

Personal Growth Through Adversity

A doctor’s work is not only about professional but also personal growth. Constant challenges demand high professional skills and deep personal responsibility from healthcare workers. Every barrier overcome becomes a step toward a greater understanding of oneself and one’s role in the lives of others.

“Challenges help me grow not only as a professional but also as an individual,” adds Dr. Shariff. Working in the medical field requires professionals to not only cope with challenges but also find opportunities for self-improvement within them.

Sharing Your Experience

The medical profession is unique in that every professional faces challenges that can become a source of inspiration and support for others. “Your stories can inspire those facing similar problems,” says Dr. Shariff. By sharing their experiences in overcoming difficulties, doctors help their colleagues and strengthen their resilience, reminding themselves of the path they have traveled and the progress they have made.

Conclusion

The medical profession is a continuous stream of challenges where every day can be decisive. However, behind all the complexities lie resilience, professionalism, and a desire to help others. As Dr. Shariff’s experience shows, difficulties can become a source of growth, inspiration, and new opportunities. “By reframing challenges as opportunities, developing resilience, and sharing your story, you can not only overcome obstacles but also use them as a springboard to greater success,” concludes Dr. Shariff.

Every medical professional knows that behind the challenges lies not just work but a personal story of strength and courage. May your journey through adversity become an example for others and a source of inspiration for those who walk this difficult yet important path.

Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu Academy Expands Utah Footprint with Opening of Third Location in Riverton

By: Maria Williams

Leader in Brazilian jiu-jitsu instruction, Gracie Barra will open its third Utah location in the city of Riverton. With schools in Salt Lake City and West Jordan, this expansion will enable more students to enjoy the inclusive, engaging classes Gracie Barra has to offer. Pioneered by franchise owners and jiu-jitsu experts Andrea Warner and Rodrigo Ziser, the Riverton branch will offer classes suitable for all skill levels and age groups. Like the other Gracie Barra franchises owned by Rodrigo and Andrea, this new location will embrace the brand’s ethos of brotherhood, integrity, and development.

Andrea Warner, a Black Belt jiu-jitsu instructor and entrepreneur, has partnered with Rodrigo Ziser, a previous owner of several Gracie Barra schools and a Second Degree Black Belt, to launch the brand’s classes in Utah. With a lack of reliable gyms in the area, Andrea felt inspired to share the benefits of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which she has been practicing for over ten years. Known as the “gentle art,” jiu-jitsu became crucial to Andrea’s personal development. She improved her mental, emotional, and physical health through the sport. Her passion for jiu-jitsu led her to open her own business, become a certified instructor, and, together with Rodrigo, expand Gracie Barra in the state of Utah.

Prior to partnering with Rodrigo as the head professor of the Gracie Barra Salt Lake City School, Andrea worked with other business partners to no avail. Her relationship with Rodrigo was mutually beneficial and allowed her to recognize a greater opportunity for Gracie Barra in Utah. “I always knew I wanted to open my own gym after I became serious about jiu-jitsu,” says Andrea. “Because Rodrigo already experienced gym ownership in Brazil, his perspective toward Gracie Barra was different from mine. He helped me see that our Salt Lake City branch was only a small piece of a larger puzzle we could build. Our partnership inspires me to continue opening Gracie Barra locations across Utah until every student has access to world-class training.”

Opened months before the pandemic, the Gracie Barra Salt Lake City branch encountered significant challenges on the road to success. However, Andrea and Rodrigo overcame these obstacles and founded their second academy in West Jordan. This school was instantly successful, with signups quickly flooding in. The location has now become one of Utah’s largest jiu-jitsu gyms, boasting over 3,200 square feet of mats. Rodrigo anticipates the Riverton gym becoming just as popular, helping people to get fit, confident, and happy.

“Our schools adhere to Gracie Barra’s pillars of brotherhood, integrity, and development,” he says. “These values support students on their lifelong jiu-jitsu journeys and enable every location to offer a standardized curriculum as part of a larger structured learning plan. Once the Riverton gym opens in October, Gracie Barra will touch hundreds more students, shaping them into better people through jiu-jitsu.”

Summary

Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu Academy is expanding its presence in Utah with the opening of a third location in Riverton, joining existing schools in Salt Lake City and West Jordan. Led by franchise owners and jiu-jitsu experts Andrea Warner and Rodrigo Ziser, the new Riverton branch will offer classes for all ages and skill levels, embodying Gracie Barra’s values of brotherhood, integrity, and personal development. The expansion reflects the duo’s commitment to bringing the benefits of Brazilian jiu-jitsu to more students across the state, with the Riverton gym set to open in October.

Deborah Darbonne: Educator and Activist for Students

By: Maria Williams

The Xavier Institute of Louisiana recently highlighted the significant achievement gap between Black students and their White and Asian-American peers. The study highlighted several contributing factors, the prominent being a lack of self-esteem and the absence of peer support programs. As an educator and activist, Dr. Deborah Darbonne has devoted her career to confronting these issues.

As the Principal of Florida City Elementary School, Dr. Darbonne has made significant efforts in closing the achievement gap and advocating for social justice. She believes that fostering healthy school environments can reduce racial inequities through the promotion of strong relationships, restorative justice, and equity-focused interventions.

Championing Mental Health

Dr. Darbonne emphasizes the importance of mental health and wellbeing. She advocates for peer support programs and maintaining a healthy mental balance. “I’ve learned not to trade my health for success. I also avoid overextending myself by saying no to things that cause stress. I prioritize what truly matters. Meditating in the morning and taking short breaks during the day keeps me focused and productive. These practices have been transformative in my journey toward a balanced life,” shares Darbonne.

Poor self-esteem can lead to negative thoughts, anxiety, and depression. Nurturing self-esteem through supportive relationships and positive affirmations is vital for maintaining mental well-being and overall happiness.

Inspiring Through Volunteerism

Dr. Debbie Darbonne has continued to grow professionally, dedicating herself to making a positive impact in education and society.

Her commitment to kindness and compassion extends beyond her professional life. Her volunteer work with organizations like Guardian Ad Litem and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America has reinforced the importance of advocating for those who cannot advocate for themselves. “The rewards of giving your time and energy to support others are immeasurable,” she says. “The positive impact you can make on someone’s life is profound.”

Fighting for Equity and Justice in Education

Inspired by Oprah Winfrey’s leadership style, Dr. Deborah Darbonne is passionate about equity, social justice, and equal education. Throughout her three-decade career, she has integrated technology to personalize learning and developed robust social-emotional learning programs for underprivileged children. She has forged partnerships with local organizations in Florida to provide additional resources for students and their families.

Dr. Darbonne believes parents’ and teachers’ involvement is crucial for a child’s development. She recalls one particular incident in her career that came from an unexpected phone call. A former student, Alice Brown, invited her to attend her high school graduation. Brown had come from a high-crime, low-socioeconomic neighborhood and struggled academically. As her second-grade ESE Resource Teacher, Dr. Darbonne saw Brown’s potential and became her mentor. By third grade, Brown was out of special education. They continued their meetings for the next three years, and by middle school, she was excelling academically and had become a role model for other students.

“Years later, when I received the invitation to Brown’s graduation, it came as a surprise. I was an Assistant Principal then. Her deep gratitude, crediting her success to my support and belief, was priceless. Attending Brown’s graduation was more than a ceremony; it was a profound experience. Watching her walk across the stage, I was overwhelmed with pride and reflection. It reaffirmed why I chose to become an educator,” Darbonne said with overwhelming joy.

The Transformative Power of Motherhood

Dr. Darbonne’s life took a transformative turn with the birth of her son. Ambitious and career-focused, she had climbed the corporate ladder with determination. However, after holding her newborn son in her arms, she felt a sense of responsibility. Her identity underwent a radical reinvention as she became his mom. Frivolous worries faded, replaced by deeper questions about being the finest mother she could be.

Shared giggles during bath time and bedtime routines became her treasures. Life’s greatest accomplishments seemed insignificant next to these everyday miracles. Her ambition transformed, extending beyond career goals to nurturing a tiny soul, teaching kindness, and creating memories.

Becoming a mother was not just about her son’s birth; it was Dr. Darbonne’s rebirth—a transformation that shaped her into a better version of herself. Through the love and challenges of motherhood, she found a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment, forever changed by the precious gift of her son.

Embracing a Growth Mindset

Dr. Deborah Darbonne inspires others to adopt a growth mindset, a concept she learned from her favorite book, “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success” by Carol Dweck. In the book, Dweck explains that a fixed mindset limits our belief in our ability to learn and improve, while a growth mindset allows us to see our capacities and talents as developable over time. This mindset encourages a positive attitude, viewing challenges as opportunities with persistence and effort and accepting constructive criticism. “The book dispels the notion that we are confined to societal labels,” says Dr. Darbonne. “Anyone can excel with enough effort and a positive attitude.”

According to a 2018 study published in the Child and Adolescent Social Work Journal, African-American youth with strong educational support systems and community support show improved academic outcomes and personal development. This research also points out that students who perceive their educational opportunities positively are more likely to excel and contribute to their communities.

Within this frame, Dr. Darbonne aims to highlight the significant role of safe, supportive learning environments and equitable access to essential resources in the overall success of African-American students.
