La Goulue Hosts an Exclusive Pairing Event with Altima Caviar & House of Hazelwood

La Goulue, the beloved Upper East Side French bistro, will host an exclusive pairing event with Altima Caviar, the new women-run caviar brand, and House of Hazelwood on September 5th from 7 pm – 8:30 pm.

The evening will kick off with a welcome glass of champagne and passed canapes from Executive Chef Antoine Camin. The event, which will be led by experts Carolyn Sellars, Owner of Adventures in Whisky, and Alayna Steinman, COO of Altima Caviar, will consist of four pairings followed by an exploration of how each whisky enhances the caviar’s nuanced flavors.

  •  The Eight Grain and Siberian: The Eight Grain is a 40-year-old blended grain scotch whisky. This highly unusual release brings together the distillery character of eight of Scotland’s closed and active grain whisky distilleries. Combining the rich and unctuous decadence and bright citrus notes characteristic of the component distilleries, this release is rare, unrepeatable, and utterly delicious. Only 384 bottles have been produced. This will be paired with Siberian, a creamy and nutty long finish with a delicate texture.
  • Next Chapter and Amber Oscietra: Next Chapter, a 50-year-old blended scotch whisky, was distilled in 1972 and initially aged to near perfection in a combination of European and American oak. This blend embarked on a brave new chapter through a 15-year secondary finishing period in active ex-bourbon barrels. Such a process is unusual but has added fresh vigor to the already weighty blend. It is a testament to the power of new beginnings and a reminder that it’s never too late to embark upon the next chapter. There have only been 157 bottles produced. This will be paired with Amber Oscietra, which is crisp, buttery with ocean brine, and has a delicate to firm texture.
  • The Unknown and Beluga Hybrid: The Unknown is a 44-year-old blended Scotch whisky shrouded in mystery regarding the origins of its components. What is known is that the elements were distilled in 1978 and expertly blended in 1989, followed by an impressive 33-year secondary maturation in a single refill butt. This careful aging process has resulted in a blend of exceptional quality, with only 143 bottles ever produced. This will be paired with the Beluga Hybrid, rich, nutty, buttery with a silky and firm texture.
  • A Trail of Smoke and Gold Imperial Oscietra: A Trail of Smoke, a 42-year-old blended malt scotch whisky, is a beautifully balanced malt whisky that takes us on a meandering journey through Scotland’s islands, from dry and herbal to luscious and fruity, with a delicate trail of woodsmoke always present in the background. It is an astonishingly complex, wonderfully evocative release redolent of the remarkable islands from which it hails. Only 385 bottles have been produced. This will be paired with the rarest of the caviars served for the evening, Gold Imperial Oscietra, which is rich, nutty, and creamy with a delicate texture.

Ecodunia – founded by thought leader and entrepreneur Cera Muchiri – represents a necessary social shift towards ethically-enhanced business practices in the fashion and textile industries of the Global South. Whilst fair-trade regulations ensure worldwide consumers pay fair prices for goods, Ecodunia recognizes an often-neglected area of workspace inequality that can be lost in the murky waters of mass production and product fulfillment. Centered around the idea that Kenyan blue-collar workers are entitled to the same privileges seen in white-collar workplaces, Ecodunia seeks to implement honorable and dignified initiatives to serve those upholding the foundationary level of the production pyramid. Upon establishing its own fully functioning workspace in Nairobi, Kenya, Ecodunia aims all employees operate in a naturally lit environment with access to two meals a day and the aim of long-term financial security.

Conversely, around 80% of Kenyan workers in 2023 remained under the poverty line, implying that their incomes were insufficient to afford a decent living for themselves and their families. Aside from the direct concerns such conditions can cause for the average employee, this also inhibits them from breaking free from generational cycles of poverty. As charity initiatives enter the East African landscape, they seek to alleviate some of these pressing issues – however, without the implementation of long-term solutions, charity alone does little to make profound and lasting changes at a constitutional level. Cera Muchiri draws on her personal experiences growing up in the region, describing how the effects of accepting donations can diminish the empowering feeling of true autonomy. Hoping to grant financial security to more workers across the country, Cera Muchiri continues to provide life-changing opportunities to the Kenyan labor force –  advocating the view that: “my community doesn’t need charity as much as it needs opportunity.”

As Ecodunia’s products reach the hands of its consumers, it encourages wearers to take pride in their purchases. Often, the transaction between the Kenyan laborer and the American consumer is seen as an unequal, charitable exchange. Rather than feeling as though they are simply helping Kenyan workers achieve a better life, Ecodunia gives their audience an opportunity, the opportunity of mutual reciprocation. “We provide world-class products that customers desire, it just so happens that you are also supporting a community on the other side of the globe.” This highlights that with a truly fair transaction the worldwide consumer can gain a sustainable, fashionable new accessory. 

The social enterprise of Ecodunia perpetuates the idea that dignity is at the root of long-lasting economic stability. In their work to offer sustainable and comfortable working environments across Kenya, the business has seen fruitful results on the ground level. Since its inception in 2019, the organization has granted access to education and financial autonomy for its growing team of tailors and leathersmiths. Currently a team of twelve, each crafts-person in the Ecodunia workshop has three or more children with new-found access to schooling – granting the women a deserved sense of pride in providing for their children, without accepting handouts from others. Southampton Race of Hope Draws 1,000, Raises $500K for Research

(August 8, 2024- Southampton, NY) – The Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s (HDRF) Ninth Annual 5K Race of Hope brought together 1000 men, women, and children on Sunday, August 4 in Southampton Village in support of research and mental health awareness.  Acclaimed author and influencer Stacey Griffith, Founding Senior Master Instructor at SoulCycle,  cheered the crowd as Celebrity Grand Marshal.  

The event raised over $500,000 for research into new and improved treatments for depression and anxiety.  Both the number of participants and dollars raised set new records for the event, which continues to grow each year. 

HDRF founder Audrey Gruss and Board member Arthur Dunnam, both Hamptons residents, served with Griffith as Co-Grand Marshals of the 5K Walk/Run (3.1 miles), which is a USA Track and Field-sanctioned event.  

At the opening ceremony, Audrey Gruss said: “Today we are a thousand people strong. We are so uplifted by this groundswell of support from the community in support of HDRF and its mental health mission.  Depression is the number one reason in the world for disability. It is not a tummy ache, it is depression. And now after Covid, a third of Americans, men, women, and children are struggling with symptoms of depression and anxiety. That’s why HDRF is working to find new treatments to help people feel better worldwide.”

Celebrity Grand Marshal Stacey Griffith said: “There is no depression on my watch!” with a smile and a fist pump.  “That is why I am here with the Race of Hope. I will be here every summer, forever and ever.“ She added: “When you participate in something in your community, and you’re connected to your neighbors and your friends, it brings an energy level to this part of where we are, and it vibrates Southampton to a really high place.” 

Grier Henchy, 17, participated in Sunday’s Race with her famous mom Brooke Shields, who was one of the first celebrities to speak openly about depression.  Henchy, a previous Grand Marshal of HDRF’s Teen Race of Hope in NYC, is following in Shields’ footsteps as a passionate mental health advocate.

Hope and good vibes were palpable as participants set off from the starting line to complete the 3.1-mile course around Lake Agawam and the tree-lined streets of Southampton, NY.  They created a parade of sunshine, with everyone donning t-shirts and caps in HDRF’s signature sunshine yellow.  

At the close of the race, Audrey Gruss handed out awards in several categories, including First Prize for best male to Jordan Daniel, and First Prize for the best female time to Jenny Grimshaw.   The award for the largest team went to Josh Gruss and his team, Team Fleming, with 58 members.  Team Fleming also won an award for raising  over $9,000.  The award for Top Individual Fundraiser went to Arthur Dunnam, who raised $39,425 from friends and family for his race.  

The first 600 participants to pick up their gear received an HDRF-branded ultra-lightweight jacket, hat and race shirt. All racers received a finisher medal.  The first, second, and third-place winners received cash prizes of up to $500. 

HDRF also partnered with Revo, an American heritage sunglass brand renowned for its polarized lenses, for the Race. The first 100 participants who arrived at Early Race Packet Pick Up received a voucher for a pair of Revo sunglasses. Additionally, the first female and male winners each were awarded a pair of Revo sunglasses.

HDRF has been a leader in depression research since 2006, bringing together neuroscientists from different universities to work as a team. They collaborate and pool data to better understand the root causes of depression in the brain and to accelerate the next generation of treatments.  Currently, a clinical trial for a new category of medication is underway at Mount Sinai and Stanford.

About Hope for Depression Research Foundation:
