Caroline Edwards-Morrison: A Decade of Judicial Excellence

Judge Caroline Edwards-Morrison has spent over a decade serving the community of Rochester, N.Y. within the municipal and county judicial system. First elected to Rochester City Court in 2013, Judge Morrison went on to run a second successful campaign in 2022 for Monroe County Court. She will serve as an elected Monroe County Court Judge for the next ten years and is recognized as a prominent legal figure across Rochester, New York, for her judicial excellence, or some would add – legal restraint.

Like all elected judges across the nation, Judge Morrison recited and agreed to an oath of office before her first day on the job. While the exact language for each city, state, or federal court may differ, the sentiment is usually the same – to administer justice and impartially perform duties according to the best of your abilities without respect to person, wealth, or prestige.

Judge Morrison exemplifies judicial excellence. It is assumed that judges will consider the facts of every case without considering their own personal ideologies or preconceived views, without favor to familial or friendly associations, and without regard to political pressures.

Judicial excellence begins with legal education and applying the law. But Judge Morrison also knows that humankind is not painted in shades of gray, and we cannot expect judges to be without implicit biases that even the most obedient public officer may not be aware of. This is where self-awareness, legal restraint, and compassion must dictate a judge’s behavior and decision making.

Judge Morrison is very aware of national statistics that seem to favor longer incarceration sentences for black men committing similar crimes versus their white counterparts. In just the past few years, she, like the rest of the country, has witnessed judicial actions at the highest levels of our court system overturn decades of Roe v Wade, give the death blow to Affirmative Action, pass legislation that bans certain books while accepting classroom material that effectively rewrites history, and enforce the right to refuse services to same-sex couples.

These recent challenges to longstanding legal codes are often supported by one political faction versus another. As Judge Morrison knows, every judge will bring their own inherent views into the courtroom, but personal or political viewpoints must always take a back seat to judicial excellence.

Judicial excellence is complex because judges have some wiggle room in their decision-making. Some judges apply a literal rule of law and interpret the black letter law according to how the law was written.

Other judges take an interpretive approach, considering the original text as a historical source from which only to pull meaning. Our Supreme Court is tasked with interpreting the law according to our Constitution. However, we still see how the decisions can lean to one side or the other when the court is dominated by judges selected by one political party versus the other.

Then you have judges like Judge Morrison, who regards herself as a judge who interprets the law with a goal towards achieving a fair and just result. A judge who looks beyond color, class, gender, or lifestyle when handing down decisions based on a fair and equal interpretation of the law. 

Morrison believes in the pillars of judicial excellence, including legal knowledge, critical thinking, self-knowledge and self-control, moral ethics, and community or national engagement to manage court cases with respect and understanding. Often, she sees her job as facilitating a resolution instead of doling out punishment. You wear many hats as a senior epidemiologist, keynote speaker, author, and coach empowering professional women. What inspired your transition from a purely scientific career into these other personal development and empowerment domains?


Dr. Ajao: My journey into personal development started many years into my career as an epidemiologist.  After my doctoral training, I landed my dream job as an epidemiologist at a highly prestigious federal agency doing essential public health work serving the US public. However, many years into my career, I felt stretched, stagnant, stuck, and unfulfilled. I was no stranger to hard work, so as a minority female scientist in a large organization, I thought I just needed to do more work to be seen, heard, and valued. Unfortunately, I got burned out just doing more, and I realized I needed a different strategy and set of tools than I possessed to move to the next levels in my career. With no training or understanding of navigating my career growth, as well as being a wife and mother of three school-age children, I sought out female mentors in my professional space. Still, I was unable to find such a female mentor. This period of internal struggle led me on a personal development journey where I had to discover my unique strengths and skills and align them with my professional goals. This period of navigating and advancing my career was pivotal. It taught me the power of personal leadership, leaning into my strengths, redefining mentorship, growing my community, and focusing on service to reach my potential, maximize my impact, and ultimately find fulfillment. My journey also inspired my book and work, which is focused on empowering professional women. As female professionals, we have many responsibilities and unique challenges for which we need unique tools. I believe women need a community of empowered women to mentor, support, and keep them accountable. It is also imperative for women to see other women excelling in positions they aspire for and for women who have attained leadership positions in their organizations to be accessible and available as mentors to younger professional women. 

As a dynamic keynote speaker, what are some of the most common mindset challenges you see holding professional women back from reaching their full potential? How do you help them overcome these through your speeches and coaching?


Dr. Ajao: There are many mindset challenges that hold professional women back from reaching their full potential. One is that many women believe they must be 100% ready before they reach their next level of professional or business opportunity. They allow their fear of the unknown and self-limiting beliefs to hold them back. While one must be qualified to take on any opportunity, one does not have to know everything needed to succeed before taking it on. Another is that professional women believe that they would be overwhelmed by taking on their next-level opportunities while maintaining their familial responsibilities as a wife, mother, and/or daughter. Many women fear taking on higher-level opportunities may compromise their work-life balance. I teach women that moving to their next-level positions requires taking some risks, facing their fears, and moving outside their comfort zone. In my talks and workshops, I provide women with practical tools to shift their mindset so they can take the necessary actions to step into their next-level opportunity. A third mindset challenge I see is that professional women do not ask for their worth. Women need to believe in their strengths and the skills they bring to the table and not compromise their value. I teach women to discover their strengths, trust themselves, and align their strengths with their professional goals. These mindset challenges underscore the importance of finding female mentors and a community of female leaders taking risks and excelling in their fields for guidance, support, opportunities, visibility, and accountability. 

You emphasize the importance of finding the right mentors. What role have mentors played in your multifaceted journey, and what advice do you give professional women on identifying and cultivating impactful mentorship relationships?


Dr. Ajao: In my experience, mentors play a very important role in one’s professional or business journey. Mentors can guide, advise, advocate, sponsor, and provide growth opportunities. Although most of my professional mentors have been men, more recently, in the personal development and empowerment space, I have been lucky to meet some phenomenal women who have been great mentors to me. It is important that women first identify the areas where they want to grow and find mentors who have the expertise and are willing to support their growth. A mentoring relationship can be short or long-term, formal, regularly scheduled meetings, or informal/casual meet-ups. Whatever the form, style, or length of mentorship is desired, mentors and mentees must be appropriately matched, and expectations and deliverables must be clearly communicated upfront. Beyond mentors, there is also a role for peers and the community. Peers are women on the same professional or business level with similar goals. Peers can support, motivate, and serve as accountability partners. A community is a larger organized group or network of professional or businesswomen who can provide new opportunities for visibility and growth. Mentors, peers, and the community all play important roles in the journey of professional women, and these relationships should be intentionally cultivated and nurtured. 

Many women struggle to balance career, business, family, and self. Based on your experiences juggling many roles, what strategies do you recommend for professional women to find that elusive work-life balance?


Dr. Ajao: Balancing career or business aspirations with family responsibility and self-care is a huge and ongoing challenge for professional women. As women, we have many responsibilities in our careers, businesses, and families, and we must be cognizant of our limits and incorporate healthy strategies to help us manage them. One helpful strategy is to know your values and prioritize what is important to you as an individual, including family, career, business, and self-care. As professional women, we need to understand that although we can do it all, we may not be able to do it all at the same time, and there are different seasons in life for various goals. Therefore, prioritizing and setting realistic goals with timelines, planning, and scheduling are essential so the different areas of our lives can be nurtured to the extent necessary and desired. Another helpful strategy is to create a daily routine. Healthy daily routines create good habits, improve predictability, prevent chaos, and help with effective time management. Having a clear understanding of what we must accomplish daily and moving through our tasks seamlessly becomes vital in accomplishing our goals without burning out. A third helpful strategy is to delegate responsibilities that can be outsourced to free up time to focus on the most critical tasks a woman wants to prioritize for growth. In all of these, it is crucial to prioritize self-care. Self-care is personal, so every woman must define what self-care means to her and incorporate some rejuvenating activities like walking, gardening, yoga, reading, music, meditation, and resting into her daily routine. These activities will allow us to replenish periodically and stay healthy in our body and mind to continue to advance in our careers and business while playing our other essential roles as wives, mothers, and caretakers. 

In your book “Empowered Woman,” you outline five growth principles. Could you briefly summarize one of those principles and how you’ve applied it in your own life and work?


Dr. Ajao: All five growth principles are equally important, and they work together to form an empowerment feedback loop once they are consistently practiced. However, my favorite principle is probably “conquering your fears,” probably because this is the area I am most challenged by. The principle that I practice more regularly is to step out of my comfort zone continuously. The two fears that I battle with the most are the fear of rejection and the fear of responsibility. Both types of fear paralyze us and prevent us from implementing our ideas and reaching our full potential. On my life journey, I have learned that fear is real and should be acknowledged, but fear should not be allowed to take over or stop us from achieving our goals. A few tools that I use and teach to conquer fear are: 

  • Commit to your goals and your success by confronting and stepping into your fears daily.
  • Break your goals down into a stepwise plan, focus on the process, and execute the plan by taking daily consistent action. 
  • Practice gratitude daily and replace self-limiting beliefs with positive self-talk and affirmations.
  • Stay focused on your goals; do not compare yourself to others or seek external approval. 
  • Surround yourself with others with similar goals who can support and hold you accountable on your journey. Consistently practicing this advice will allow women to confront and conquer any fear and self-limiting beliefs.


You started coaching and empowerment initiatives later in your professional journey. What made you realize the need for this work to empower women rather than general career coaching?


Dr. Ajao: In my professional career, I have worked alongside many highly educated women, many of whom are from different racial backgrounds. In my interactions, I have heard a lot of frustration around not having the right tools to navigate career and life. Among women of color, I have heard dissatisfaction with finding minority female mentors and sponsors to support their career growth. Having been through this experience, I understand the problem of working hard but still feeling stuck and unfulfilled with no guidance, and I realize that many women are in the same situation. My challenges led me on a personal development journey that culminated in my book and founding empowering initiatives, an organization focused on empowering professional women to find their passion and walk in their purpose to have more impact, maximize their potential, and find fulfillment. Our goal is to continue supporting women with the right tools to maximize their strengths and advance their careers or businesses while successfully navigating all other life responsibilities.

Cesare Catania: When Engineering Turns Into Art

Born in 1979, Cesare Catania is an Italian artist now fully established internationally. Considered by many to be a pioneer of digital art, Catania was born as a traditional artist and is counted among the masters of contemporary art for his polychromatic paintings and his timeless sculptures.

But where does all this artistic genius come from?

The story of Cesare Catania is quite singular. Since he was passionate about painting and drawing as a child, he approached musical art with a strict piano education. Catania immediately showed an innate predisposition for science and mathematics. He accustoms his mind to solving problems of logic, arithmetic, and geometry. He learns to observe reality with a single eye: that of someone who first synthesizes, then abstracts, and finally creates. Like Leonardo da Vinci, who combined science and art to explore the mysteries of nature, Catania also unites two seemingly distant worlds to create something extraordinary. “Scientia potentia est” (Knowledge is power) seems to be a guiding principle for his work.

Catania then decided to study civil engineering at the Polytechnic of Milan, which, according to him, “was perhaps the only faculty that I could have done without much effort. I didn’t like memorizing; I preferred to read only once, understand, assimilate, and therefore remember. The humanistic faculties would have forced me to repeat mnemonically to create synapses and memorize. Fixing the memory of something that logically has its own correlation is definitely quicker and easier than doing it on something to repeat and memorize.“

And so far, perhaps nothing special. We are, therefore, talking about an engineer who is a lover of logic, mathematics, and problem-solving in all the fields in which this can be applied. Of course, everything was quite normal, except this engineer was actually an artist who abstracted the reality around him, synthesized it into simple polygons, and finally transformed it into works of art. His unique vision still allows him to see the world through a geometric lens, transforming the chaos of everyday life into orderly and harmonious works of art.

Except this engineer was simply looking for a way to fully study the world around him and represent it absolutely through the instrument that sentimentally belonged to him most: contemporary art. Except this artist continues to call his works of art “works of genius” today. Except that this artist handles brush, colors, matter, and all the tools of contemporary art as if they were everyday utensils, almost as if they were a knife and fork. When a new material is presented to him, such as glass, in the artist residency in Venice in July 2023, rather than intimidating him, it exalts him and pushes him towards creativity. 

Except when you talk to this engineer, you feel like you’re talking to a philosopher. Then you understand that he’s an artist who, however, likes to define himself as “a simple worker of emotions.” Like Leonardo da Vinci, who studied the human body with scientific precision to represent it artistically, Catania combines his engineering knowledge with his artistic sensitivity. Catania’s works are a product of his rational mind and a profound reflection of his feelings and life experiences.

Self-taught in artistic matters, the Italian painter and sculptor perhaps did not immediately have clear ideas of what awaited him in adulthood. What is certain is that he had to combine his passion for geometry with his sensitivity. “A sensitivity I wasn’t willing to give in to. Rationality is a matter for children when combined with sentimental aridity. Truly mature people are those who know how to get emotional and are not ashamed to show it.” The Italian artist explains this to us: a unique embodiment of a combination of talent and training. This combination has allowed Catania to develop a distinctive style that differentiates him from his contemporaries.

Today, we find him among the most successful artists of our era, capable of representing the contemporary world with recognizable, personal, democratic, shared, and universal art. An art that always derives from inspiration. “I don’t like creating works of art that don’t have a connection to my feelings,” the Italian artist explains. “Otherwise, I would be creating design works. Every time I approach the canvas or the shapeless material to be shaped, I always feel the same lump in my throat, the same shyness of someone who knows what they feel but doesn’t know how to represent it. This is how an artist should feel before every creation.” This feeling of shyness and respect for the creative process is a constant in Catania’s career and reflects his deep humility and dedication to his art.

He is, therefore, an artist who developed a passion starting from his feelings and from a profession: that of an engineer. He was an engineer who made his studies the virtue of his informal art first, cubist and geometric later. An artist who started from the world around him to represent shapes and images. Knowing his passions for photography and cinematography well, he was an engineer who decided to let himself be carried away by what attracted him most: feelings. 

His works are a journey through time and space, a continuous dialogue between past, present and future, always guided by a profound sense of humanity. For example, his latest work was presented at the 60th edition of the Venice Biennale. The work is titled “The Embrace Phy Version” and is a physical work of art which, thanks to augmented reality and artificial intelligence, becomes a phygital sculpture. In practice, the artist Cesare Catania created a masterpiece of contemporary sculpture in 2023, then passed the sculpture to the engineer Cesare Catania, who developed digital sculpture software and a digital version of the work itself to ferry it from the real world to reality and finally, at the beginning of 2024, the artist Cesare Catania once again gave an artistic touch to the whole thing and presented it at the Venice Biennale. It is a unique work in every sense that develops engagement on the part of the public, a work that is not only liked but also different. A work that excites because of how it is made and what it does. A work of art that immediately becomes a work of genius if you think only about half of what was done to make it as we see it today. A work that, given the way it was conceived, is certainly the contemporary art sculpture of the future.
