Moving Forward With Recycling ―Australians Confused as to Where to Dispose of These Items

The practice of recycling is still widely disregarded, as the emerging consumerist society is focused on buying but not dealing with the trash that comes up as packaging, for example. People are either confused about what to recycle or don’t have proper access to recycling, but many more factors contribute to this behavior. 

The recycling commotion also happens in Australia, where only 18% of plastic ends up where it belongs. Experts believe the country will not meet its national target of recycling 70% of plastic packaging by 2025. At the same time, they’ve recently warned communities in the online media that the government fails to investigate companies and penalize those unable to respect the law. 

The self-regulation approach seems inefficient, so the country needs more realistic targets and stronger reinforcements. 

But above all these elements, Australia needs education. Many citizens don’t know where to dispose of some trash categories, which leads to hazards. Here’s why.

Research indicates people struggle to recycle

A few years ago, the Cleanaway Recycling Behaviors Report showed how people would recycle pizza boxes with greasy stains or didn’t know they had to rinse containers before recycling them. A more recent survey done by YouGov addressed the problem of recycling and correctly disposing of unusual items, such as lifeless animals. 

Unfortunately, incorrectly disposing of them exposes animals and humans to several health risks, especially if the animal has been infected with botulism or anthrax. Livestock carcasses can pollute water supplies and trigger an animal disease outbreak. 

Another concerning fact is that people are unknowingly littering vapes and e-cigarettes whole instead of removing the battery. When left intact in regular bins, lithium batteries can cause trucks and waste facilities to catch fire. 

How should the government respond? 

Australia is a massive country, so imposing an appropriate and sustained recycling system can be challenging. As a company that wants to use balers or compactors for recycling, you could try renting a machine first instead to see if it’s the right fit for your business. However, the country’s waste condition is worrying, so governments and local councils must work together to invest more in the country’s waste and recycling infrastructure. 

Australia’s Recycling Modernisation Fund (RMF) aims to establish a circular economy, but despite considerable investment within facilities, plastic production cannot be overthrown by the recycling rate. At the same time, companies continuing to use unrecyclable and unsustainable packaging contribute to the massive amount of waste in the country, which is about 75.8 million tonnes. 

Poor recycling impacts climate change 

Unfortunately, regardless of how much waste is exported, the waste inside the country is considerably fastening climate change as the land and sea temperatures increase. At the same time, the weather is more bizarre than ever, with rainfall patterns and fire risks causing wildlife disruptions. 

Experts foresee a worrying future for Australia. Citizens will experience many hot days throughout the year, leading to drought. Therefore, snow depths will decline, and sea levels will rise. At the same time, extreme rainfall events will be frequent, especially across northern regions. 

Even if we could all make an effort to stop climate change, it’s too late now. However, what we can do instead is slow down the rate at which the planet will become inhabitable for humans and animals, which is expected to happen 1.3 billion years from now. 

Although this could have happened much later due to the sun’s natural evolution, the human population will surely fasten this event by human-made climate change. 

Are Australians concerned with climate change?

Seeing how visibly the weather changes, citizens are afraid of how climate change could impact nature and their lives. According to the Australia Institute’s annual Climate of the Nation, over 70% of Australians are distressed about the matter, while others are nervous about the supply chain systems. 

People are primarily afraid of droughts and flooding, bushfires and the extinction of animals and plants. Currently, over 2,212 species might become extinct in the future due to climate change ―fish populations decline due to ocean acidification, and deforestation deteriorates almost half of Australia’s land. 

At the same time, people would also consider fossil fuel companies liable to pay for climate impacts, whether we think about taxes or the costs of handling climate change and introducing sustainable measures and products. 

The government’s lack of initiative is worrying

Human interventions are among the main factors affecting climate change in Australia. Expert foundations and organizations found that there aren’t many evaluations of land-clearing projects, and they’re usually approved too easily. The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act is pretty inefficient in imposing the law, and the government continues to approve fossil fuel projects that lead to massive deforestation. 

At the same time, the government knows too little about the country’s communities, so there’s no chance of properly educating them in accordance with their behaviors and interests. Therefore, the effectiveness of superficial community programs is low since there’s no genuine engagement with people. 

Where to look for inspiration 

While Australia should come up with ideas and strategies that fit the country’s features, the government can seek inspiration from countries that recycle in the right way. Sweden, for example, leverages non-recyclable waste to produce power for thousands of households. 

Japan’s population developed a laudable system of recycling habits in which each house owner is held accountable for waste segregation as they always comply with regulations. Switzerland made recycling free, while non-recyclable waste costs money, making people recycle every glass bottle or aluminum can. In South Korea, food waste is handled in a way that makes people pay for the food they throw out. In less than two years, food waste was cut enormously. 

What do you think about recycling?

In Australia, the state of recycling products is significantly worrying, as many people are not aware of their responsibility to dispose of all kinds of items correctly. As more products are created, such as vapes, further confusion is created as to where they should be thrown out, so they end up in landfills. The general lack of knowledge and the government’s underestimation of the matter led to a decline in the environment’s quality and more animal and plant species going extinct.

When a doctor or healthcare provider misses a diagnosis, the patient may suffer unnecessary pain and complications. This can lead to prolonged illness, additional medical treatments, and even permanent harm. In some cases, a failure to diagnose can be life-threatening. When a mistake happens, it doesn’t just affect the person who’s sick. Their family and friends feel it, too. That’s why having a full understanding of the consequences of not obtaining a proper medical diagnosis on time and accurately is so important to your health and wellbeing.

Delayed Treatment 

One of the most immediate consequences of a failure to diagnose is delayed treatment. When a medical condition is not identified promptly, treatment is delayed. This can allow the condition to worsen over time. For example, undiagnosed cancer can progress to a more advanced stage, making it more difficult to treat effectively. Waiting too long for treatment can worsen things, requiring more serious medical steps. Catching a problem early is critical to beating it, as delays can mess up a person’s chances and well-being.

Increased Medical Costs 

A failure to diagnose can lead to increased medical costs for the patient. When a condition is not diagnosed in a timely manner, it often becomes more severe and requires more extensive treatment. This can include additional tests, procedures, and hospital stays. Medical costs can be high when someone is sick for a long time. This can make families feel stressed about paying bills. India’s 2024 Elections and Democracy: An Interview with Devangana Mishra

We chatted with Devangana Mishra, from India, author of ’26, Kamala Nehru Ridge, Civil Lines, Delhi’ about India, democracy, Narendra Modi’s third term and what’s in the pipeline for her in 2024.

Q. What’s the election season looking like in India, we ask you this since your last book charted Indian Independence, it’s going to be almost 80 years of India being a democratic, republic, secular, independent country?

Devangana: I don’t know, honestly, we’re all at our seat’s edge. There’s a few states where some party other than a Modi run party shows potential, but it’s been too little or distracted or just lackadaisical campaigning or lack of proven work for anyone else to win. That is my best political pundit prediction. Few care about anything other than their own survival in India, it’s the reality developing countries are daily faced with.. I work at ground level daily, with underprivileged families, with small communities, with city and state councils and see the condition of India’s margins daily; even if they’re unsure if they’re living the best they could or their worst lie, it’s all in upheaval and shambles. We’ll fix metro lines and roads and build temples and new parks, and speak of mosques as things we should do, but when you look at our policies, they’re all built for glorifying our good and hiding or displaying our dirt in the dust, instead of polishing it and pushing it out of the gutters India throws them in. 

India is deeply rooted in this culture of finding ‘pity’ for the margins and invisible, segregating and pushing the marginalized further to the margins and ‘priding’ in our gold; it’s rather terrible.

Q. Talk about the status of democracy in India, about free speech; most countries today have a lot of lobbying, strong groups representing historical minorities, global activism like we saw with Rafah, small scale activism, schools and universities being involved in political debates and being under scrutiny for their policies, what’s it like for you back in India?

Devangana: I have to be honest to say, that’s where the strong hold power and voice and jurisdiction, which is true of most democracies and common people like me, small writers, small activists, daily workers have little voice allowed. There are always louder, bolder voices dominating the crowd and India as a culture is built on patriarchy, on power, and strength; our cultural roots and values drive people’s activism and emotions here. It’s easy for strong but small voices to get buried or oppressed very easily, politically, culturally and familially. We continue to live in a morally, culturally textured and alive but conservative country where political and cultural voice is encouraged as long as it favors power, status quo and pride, but anything out of the rule book is easily looked at upon and oppressed and crushed through invisible force. There is no space for dissent, dissent is feared, it’s looked at upon with cross and regret, and I’m not saying dissent for the sake of dissent, but dissent to drive righteous action forward or to drive truth forward, it’s twirled and taped many feet below earth. Small parties and small people, unless united in voice with big power, can never win or be heard in our country; there’s no individualism amongst our kin.

Q. What are your thoughts on Narendra Modi’s third term, which it looks like will be a sure possibility as you said, and with the way global politics are running?

Devangana: You know that iron gate by the sea, it’s inching to a gradual close, we’re there, we’re closing, there are slogans and songs being sung by opposition and allies, Save India say some, Rise India say India’s BJP, but at the crux of it, we want to make India a global powerhouse of production, narrowing/ or being overly conservative or strategic about trade and ways of western influence, which might prove good in the short run for our GDP, but it’ll take India back a century, in a not so good way, if we don’t access ways forward. Creating a claustrophobic country of a billion and a half competing and creating and learning internally- whisking out minority religions, crushing castes further, those historically oppressed, making employment a game of ‘who produces more,’ we’re agricultural by geography, that’s our nature, at the risk of human rights without us even knowing the play and power we’re living under because we don’t know anything else, we wouldn’t know rebellion from voice. India’s gates close by the hour, and as someone who’s read books and watched movies and had families living from around the world over since I was little and I’ve lived in so many countries, this becoming is a breath-strainer. 

Q. That was a lot of big stuff; what’s next for you for 2024?

Devangana: Probably take a break from working; there’s no other way to survive a good life while being an artist and a social worker in India other than work many, many, many long, rigorous, hard hours. Once I’ve rested and watched this election play out to its end, I’ll plan my next book of verse, probably set in Gaza about a young girl and scale the work of my foundation for autism to work with small government-run inclusive schools of Mumbai clueless on autism. That feels like a lot already; I hope I do well, despite/in spite of how politics play out in our nation.
