Leslie Susana Campbell is an actress hailing from the Bahamas. The multi-linguistic former pro-swimmer has made her directorial debut with a personal story titled “Yu-Yi,” an LGBTQ drama that is hitting the film festival circuit. Leslie sat down to talk all things “Yu-Yi.”

Hello Leslie! Tell us a bit about yourself

Leslie: I am originally from The Bahamas. My mother is Cuban, and my father is Bahamian. I was born and raised in Nassau, the Bahamas. I started swimming competitively at the age of 6 and was a national champion for The Bahamas ages 6 through 10. I began competing internationally for The Bahamas at the age of 12 and did so until I was 17. I left The Bahamas at the age of 13 to attend boarding school in Chattanooga, Tennessee. 

The school at the time was number one in the US for high school swimming. I suffered a few injuries and developed respiratory issues and, ultimately, had to leave the sport. Living in a completely different country at such a young age was isolating. The cultural differences were very jarring. I was always enduring some form of either covert or overt discrimination. I remember being homesick a lot, but I had always known that the decision I made was part of a bigger purpose for my life.

What got you into acting and what made you realize that it was your chosen path?

Leslie: Acting was nowhere on my radar as something I could actually pursue. I was an athlete for The Bahamas National Swim Team. I was expected to pursue medicine. These two areas were my only focus. On top of that, I had no knowledge of any acting or performing-related classes near me. The most that I knew about were dance studios and music classes. When I was a child, I had wanted to be a ballerina, but was told that I was going to grow to be too tall in order to be one, so my parents put me in swimming instead.

I had always known that I was an artist of some kind, but I had yet to have any interaction or run-in with performing until my senior year of high school. That year, I had given a senior speech, and my speech was a spoken word piece that I had written. I received a standing ovation for it, and that moment had changed my internal world. I knew I was meant to be on the stage, and initially, I thought it was as a spoken-word performer. After graduating, I went to Arizona State University, where I began as a Cellular, Genetic Development major. I quickly realized this was not the path for me; after being miserable my entire first semester at college, I called my parents and let them know that I had to change my major because something was not right. On impulse, one evening after classes for the second semester of my sophomore year opened up, I added an acting class to my list of classes. In that class, I met my first-ever acting teacher, and she was instrumental in placing faith in my ability as an actor. She gave me a lead role in her MFA thesis project, and from there, my love for acting was solidified.

What is your new movie “Yu-Yi” about?

Leslie: “Yu-Yi’ is a raw and poignant exchange of a person confronting their friend about the challenges of coming out, the complexities of evolving feelings, struggles with identity and navigating feelings of attraction. Unresolved tensions and misunderstandings come to light as unspoken truths surface. Complexities around friendship, communication, acceptance, and ultimately, the inability to bridge the gap lead to a poignant decision that redefines their shared narrative.

What does Yu-Yi mean?

Leslie: The phrase denotes one’s ‘longing to feel intensely again.’ I felt that this title really encapsulated the essence of this project, and the nature of navigating the evolution of oneself. There is a grieving process. This grief can feel cloudy. While in it, I definitely longed to go to a space where I could feel freely, and safely again.  

When did you come up with the concept?

Leslie: I am the creator of this project. The idea was born several months ago. I wrote the first draft of the screenplay several months ago. At the time, it was a completely different idea and much less clear in its direction. I completed the penultimate draft early this year. I didn’t have the courage and resources to bring this film to life until recently. I am an artist who very much believes in using my experiences to further highlight the human condition. What I’ve lived through and experienced can very well be a vehicle for storytelling, discussion, and introspection. Conceptualizing this idea was the most challenging aspect of this film. What message am I trying to deliver? How does one take a memory, a moment, an instance, and convert it into something cinematic? Thankfully, I had many talented artists and friends to help me supersede these challenges.

Leslie: Thank you, I didn’t really plan for this specific project to be my directorial debut. I knew I wanted to direct my own project this year. It was a goal I honestly thought I would accomplish later in the year. Circumstances aligned, and I knew that I wanted my first project to be a personal one. The decision to bring Yu-Yi to life came about specifically because it is an homage to my new self. I am beyond connected to this project; I am living it. I feel very proud to be in a space where I can use myself, and my training, to share stories.

How did it feel to play yourself as a real person in the movie?

Leslie: This role was quite a unique experience. I “play” myself in this film. What is really interesting is that I play myself at a specific moment in time in my life. I am no longer in that place of my life. I found myself navigating the ways in which I am the same, and the ways I am no longer, in an acutely more specific and challenging way. It was interesting handling the dynamics of these two things being true. 

Did you find it a challenge to play yourself?

Leslie: It was very challenging and for many reasons. What was most difficult was bringing down my internal resistance to feeling such a painful experience once more. 

I had to tweak my personal process of getting into character as well. This was the first time I didn’t follow my usual method of discovering a character. For example, I always create a Bio of some kind. This time around, I had the advantage of already knowing my character’s personal and intimate history. I know myself better than anyone. There were a lot of advantages to this. The most important one being time. I had more time to focus on preparing myself to emotionally reveal my experience at a time in my life that I kept hidden from everyone. 

On a technical note, I knew that the script was unique in that it is mostly V.O. I knew my choices on screen needed to reflect my character’s inner world. But there needed to be a high degree of emotional accuracy. How I portray my character needed to align with what was pre-recorded. Or, at the very least, supplement my pre-set vocal choices. 

Introspection, followed by relaxation, were truly my two main tools of preparation for this project.

Can you share any fun facts from the whole process?

Leslie: It was funny having to switch between my director’s hat, actor’s hat, producer’s hat, production designer’s hat, and costume designer’s hat at any given moment. It was especially fun to be in front of the camera calling ‘Action!” and ‘Cut!’ for myself.

The final shot of the film came about in an impromptu manner. Gray, the DP, had the instinct to adjust the focus between my reflection on my character’s phone and the final frame of the video displayed on said phone. I made a supplementary decision to have a black photo lined up so that as soon as the final action happens, the entirety of my face (as a reflection) can be seen. As the actor, I was then able to play with delivering my character’s final moment on screen (and on a screen!). All of this took place in mere seconds! I truly felt the beauty of the nature of collaboration and filmmaking in that take.

In today’s diverse and complex art scene, painting continues to seek its place. Despite the unprecedented changes brought about by technology and media in artistic creation, traditional painting remains a profound way to express human emotions and spiritual values. Renowned painter Ziyang Xie discusses his artistic journey and philosophy in this interview.

Hello,  it’s a pleasure to speak with you today. Have you been working on any new series lately? Could you share your recent creative feelings and thoughts?

Hello! I have been trying out a new series recently, focusing more on people during the creative process, hoping to present works that convey a sense of life and space through characters and specific situations. The overall painting language continues the relatively consistent expression from my landscape works, emphasizing lyricism and scripturality, focusing on expressing a natural state of life in humans. In addition to expanding this theme, I also plan to paint a series of large-scale floral works, maintaining the same expressive language and style as before. 

Compared to your earlier landscape series, your recent creations have undergone significant changes in both color and object handling, becoming more refined. What is behind these significant changes? How do individual experiences and subjective internal choices influence your style transformation?

The refinement of the language is driven by subjective agency. Because the exploratory angles in the works from previous years were complex and the overall appearance lacked a clear personal language feature, which did not form a pattern representing my personality, I felt pressured. I believe that the primary goal of a painter is to resolve issues of language appearance and system, requiring clear pursuits and exploratory paths. In the exploration process, continuously feeling the internal changes without end mainly highlights changes in self-mood, personal cultivation, and aesthetic interests. As individual experiences in reality gradually mature, aligning with the most genuine needs of the heart, the so-called transformation of painting style naturally emerges and is actually a result of following subjective internal choices.

If every painter has internally sought their own “style,” at what stage for you did this stable style begin to form? What decisive painting practices were involved in this phase?

Finding one’s own “style” is an unavoidable question and a required course for every painter, just like a label representing one’s image and way of speaking, which everyone hopes is independent and unique. I’m not sure if I have fully formed my own “style” yet. However, since 2020, my painting language has been relatively unified, which I consider finding the ideal visual feeling I currently seek, the result of years of continuous search and exploration, hoping to continue this trend. Art is endless, and truly good works are both artistic and spiritual, extensions of culture, purifying the spiritual values in everyone’s heart.

Many of your works are created outdoors; the serene breath and subtle immersion in nature described in the works seem to deeply influence your painting process. How does the typical plein air process inspire and affect your creative work?

The serene breath and subtle immersion described are quite apt; outdoor plein air is just a form, with the key being how to paint, and painting the landscape within one’s heart is fundamental. Sometimes the reason I enjoy outdoor plein air is in exploring the relationship between humans and nature, which is also an immersive experience. Different natural landscapes bring different initial feelings to people. For someone like me, who places intuition first, this is very important.

In the contemporary art ecosystem with its diversity, complexity, and the involvement of more information media and technological forces, how do you view the value and future direction of painting creation?

The value and future direction of painting creation in the current art ecosystem, I believe, should respect the human element more. Art and technology should be inseparable, but some aspects are irreplaceable by technology, especially in artistic creation. As the main body of creation, human thoughts are firstly irreplaceable, emotions are not constant, aesthetic tastes vary, and cultural cultivation differs. This irreplaceability in artistic creation is most precious, and the different aesthetic experiences that works bring to people is where their value lies. It’s difficult to predict the future direction; I think we should coexist harmoniously, emphasizing technological development while not neglecting human power, complementing each other, and coexisting like humans and nature in harmony. I still place more importance on self-awareness and inner exploration in a very natural and stable state, quietly creating, even if it serves no purpose, simply writing and expressing, returning to the essence of the work, experiencing the reveries and emotions it brings, with sincerity and joy.

Would you place yourself within this open artistic ecosystem to evaluate your creations, or are you more focused on a natural, self-following path? What does painting mean to you personally?

This question strikes deeply at my heart; I naturally choose the latter. Because in recent years, whether in exploring paths or adjusting my mindset, I have been digging into how to follow myself, primarily self-reflective, pursuing inner self-awareness and joy in life, forming touching power through compassion and humility. The open art ecosystem has not completely disconnected, but I study myself more, with an attitude of keeping to myself and letting things take their natural course, which fits my understanding of all current things. To me personally, painting means healing, healing oneself, not demanding, not forcing, just a natural expression, feeling, thinking, cultivating, aesthetically pleasing, technical, expressive, etc., all naturally, never limiting myself on how to paint, emptying myself, the most direct is the purest and most sincere. Picking up the brush and enjoying the process, as attention gradually focuses, slowly forgetting everything around, even neglecting my own body and thoughts, only the brush and canvas communicating, all material becoming transparent and void, yet feeling my spirit fuller and more complete than ever, body and spirit as one.

An interview with Anastasiia Pogrebnaia – Elan Brand Technologist, author of the book “How to Become a Brow Artist,” and judge of the largest international beauty championship: Elan Asia Show 2024.

Hello, Anastasiia! Could you please tell us a few words about the championship?

Hello! Elan Asia Show is the largest championship for beauty masters from all over the world. Once a year, the best specialists from all continents, from more than 30 countries, gather to compete and share their knowledge. Additionally, we focus on education, experience exchange, and the latest trends in the beauty industry.

Your participation as a judge at the Elan Asia Show was a significant event. Could you share your impressions, and was this your first experience?

Certainly. I have previously served as a judge in other championships and projects. Participating as a judge at the Elan Asia Show was an incredible experience for me. It’s truly the most extensive event for beauty masters. It was a great privilege for me to work with the top professionals in our industry.

What difficulties did you encounter as a judge?

The large number of participants and many strong works. One of the main challenges for me was to ensure objectivity and fairness in evaluating the participants’ works, considering their diversity and professionalism. Taking into account the complexity of the original and the final results. And all of this had to be done within the allocated time.

While observing the participants’ works at Elan Asia Show, did you notice any common mistakes that were repeated? What advice would you give to the masters to improve their work?

Thank you, that’s an interesting question. Among the most common, I would highlight the following: mistakes in eyebrow architecture, incorrect selection of eyebrow shape or shade, improper styling of eyebrows after lamination. It’s important to understand that every participant, no matter how professional, gets nervous. Therefore, they make mistakes. It’s a kind of experience that greatly helps in future work. It’s important to understand that everyone makes mistakes, even at the championship. And I recommend all masters to participate in championships. Not only will you receive feedback from industry professionals, but you will also become a stronger specialist yourself.

With your high level of expertise, Anastasiia, what are your plans for the near future?

Thank you for asking! Even though I’ve done well in my field, I still have room to grow. In the coming months, I plan to keep teaching students worldwide, hold some workshops for new professionals, and keep growing with the Elan brand. Currently i’m living in Georgia, working on boosting the beauty industry here. My aim is to go back to the Elan Asia Show in October 2025 as a coach with my team and win some prizes.

And remember that every mistake is an opportunity for growth and improvement. It’s important to believe in yourself and not to stop at what you have achieved.
