Financial literacy is essential for everyone, but it’s especially critical for business owners who need to make sound decisions about allocating resources.

There are several reasons why financial literacy is so important for female entrepreneurs. First and foremost, women face unique challenges when accessing capital. According to a report from Goldman Sachs, women are less likely than men to have business loans or lines of credit. In fact, only 39% of women said they had access to these types of financing options compared to 53% of men. This lack of access to capital can put female entrepreneurs at a significant disadvantage. 

“A lot of women look to those around us, especially father figures, to help us navigate the world of finances. Unfortunately, this leaves us with less understanding of the whole ecosystem, and when that go-to person is no longer there, we feel lost. Without spending hours and hours on research, day and night on Google, we don’t have any other resources,” says Murray.

“People in the banking sector will consider what you look like ‘in a box,’ often saying no based purely on preconceived beliefs. I want to change that and offer more opportunities for women to access capital to fund projects that will truly make a difference.”

In addition to these challenges with accessing capital, female entrepreneurs also face gender bias when it comes to securing funding. A study from Boston Consulting Group found that male entrepreneurs are twice as likely as female entrepreneurs to say they received “excellent” funding offers from investors. Moreover, only 2% of female entrepreneurs said they could secure funding without hesitation compared to 10% of men. These disparities show that women face unique challenges in obtaining business funding. 

Finally, financial literacy is essential for female entrepreneurs because they often wear many hats within their businesses. In addition to being responsible for their companies’ day-to-day operations, women are more likely than men to be responsible for tasks like caring for children or elderly parents. Unfortunately, this can leave them with less time and energy to focus on developing their financial literacy skills. As a result, women need to seek out resources to help them build their financial literacy skills to make sound decisions for their businesses.

If you’re not financially literate, don’t worry – it’s never too late to start learning. Several resources available can help you improve your financial literacy, including books, websites, articles, and even online courses. You can also talk to a financial advisor or accountant to get guidance on specific financial problems. They say “necessity is the mother of invention,” but sometimes the creative spark only needs one bad experience to set an idea ablaze. For Eshed Doni, founder and CEO of GiftCrowd, an unpleasant ordeal helped him launch a now-thriving company after attempting to organize a group gift for his son’s teacher, drove him to develop an online platform and re-envision the entire process of classroom gifting.

One of Doni’s greatest entrepreneurial strengths is his creativity. He prides himself on his ability to tackle age-old problems and find innovative solutions.

“If you don’t know already, organizing teacher gifts is incredibly frustrating, complicated, and time-consuming,” Doni remarks. “I learned this the hard way when I volunteered to be in charge of the holiday gift for my son’s teacher. I thought a few emails would get the job done, but that couldn’t have been further from the truth!”

Doni devoted days to calling unresponsive parents, crafting polite email reminders, and toting stacks of small bills to make change. After all that, he faced the challenge of deciding what to purchase.

“I finally settled on buying a gift card from the nearby pharmacy,” recalls Doni. “Almost immediately after I checked out, another parent from my son’s class came with cash in hand.”

Designing a better way to give teachers gifts

There may be an existing answer out there, but you can still be the one to tackle the problem more effectively.”

Doni assembled a team of experts and kept the big picture front and center. “I wanted them to remember that we were contributing to a larger cause,” he explains. “When I design technology, I do it to make the world a better place. Giving and receiving gifts has been part of the human experience since the dawn of time — we express our feelings by giving people tokens of our esteem. A digital platform to make the gifting process more enjoyable could ultimately encourage more people to exchange gifts and create more opportunities for emotional connections.”

When creating a digital platform to make group gifting easier, Doni gave his imagination free rein. “I always begin with a thorough understanding of the issue,” he says. “Next, I think about whether or not to expand the solution by solving other common problems. For example, at one point in the design process, we considered adding the ability to collect class dues. When our interviews taught us that these responsibilities differ greatly from one school to the next, we continued solving only the one problem of group gifting.”
