“Soon, password and credential stealing schemes are going to be supercharged by artificial intelligence,” Deo says of the potential risks he sees for both end-users and companies. “Using a passwordless solution or passkey technology can be completely phishing resistant. The technology is going to be a very important tool in fighting against cyber crimes—phishing in particular.”

Making the New Passkey Standard Accessible
Offered as an alternative to the traditional login process, Trillbit introduced SoundAuth as a simple and seamless experience using passkeys that simplifies a phishing-resistant login process for any website, app, or device. Developed by the Fast Identity Online (FIDO) Alliance, the passkey standard has been incorporated as an operating standard at major tech leaders such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft. 

Deo says the technology is becoming “critical infrastructure for our devices and the entire internet.” By leveraging public key cryptography, the passkey standard eliminates the need for passwords altogether, replacing them with secure cryptographic keys stored on devices like smartphones or security keys. 

This ensures that user credentials are not stored centrally and are protected against common threats like phishing and credential theft. SouthAuth helps companies implement passkeys quickly and efficiently, providing complete user management and low-code authentication solutions for teams of any size.

“Approximately 90 percent of today’s password technologies companies are using still put them at risk for phishing scams,” Deo points out. “Our SoundAuth technology provides a passwordless solution that does not cost companies additional budget to implement. It delivers unparalleled security compared to existing options.”

Built on Three Decades of Industry Experience
TrillBit entered the $15 billion passwordless market in 2019 with an initial version of its password-free security. The Boston-based cybersecurity developer launched SoundAuth as a business-to-business security solution in 15 August. The newest technology has already garnered a dedicated base of early adopters and active customers, Deo claims.

A graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, Deo also attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as part of his research. He met Trillbit co-founders Mrigesh Parashar and Shashikant Burnwal as a student at IIT. Deo’s two decades of experience in computer imaging and tech solutions included work in the international energy sector.

Burnwal assumed the position of Trillbit’s chief operating officer (COO) in 2019, leveraging over 12 years of experience in product management, development, and business operations. He manages the company’s day-to-day operations and collaborative processes. Parashar, a seasoned entrepreneur and geophysicist, joined the company’s founding team as the chief product officer (CPO) that same year. He spearheads Trillbit’s product enhancement and strategic expansion initiatives. 

Also at the company’s helm is In technology sector veteran and MIT graduate Dr. Rober Poor, who serves as Trillbit’s president. Deo and his founding team manage Trillbit operations for the company’s headquarters in Massachusetts. Meanwhile, the brand’s in-house development team works primarily from its Bengaluru office in Southern India.

The Future of Passwordless Security
Deo and his team are also working to transform how data is exchanged between devices. Trillbit’s namesake technology converts any speaker into a data transmitter and any device with a microphone as a data receiver, according to the company’s co-founder. His team raised $2.1 million in funding to back the technology during its seed round.

It all began almost a decade ago when my partner, Chris, first realized the inherent need for human connection in people’s lives. He recognized that individuals were longing for meaningful relationships with others. However, when Chris initially presented the idea to me, I was skeptical about people paying to converse with strangers. This was especially true during the social media boom, where it seemed unusual for someone to spend even a single dollar on such interactions. So, for many years, I struggled to grasp the concept fully. There’s an amusing twist to this: I belong to Generation X, while Chris is a Millennial. (Laughs)

Despite Chris’s persistent efforts to persuade me over the years, I was always busy with numerous other projects, making it challenging to see the potential of Rentacyberfriend.com. However, in late October 2022, Chris walked into my office and said, “Check this out.” He had developed a demo platform, and within just one week, it had already attracted nearly a thousand registered users.

At that moment, I thought, “Oh, okay, here we are again.” Within a month, the platform had surpassed 15,000 registered users. At this point, I decided to examine the demographics more closely. To my astonishment, I discovered that 85% of the users were young individuals between 18 and 29, with the majority hailing from the United States. This revelation struck a chord with me.

Soon after, I had an experience that profoundly impacted my understanding. I was dining with friends in San Diego when I noticed a large table nearby. About 10 to 12 young individuals were engrossed in their mobile devices, not conversing with each other, and this moment resonated deeply within me as I realized that the younger generation perceives the world differently from my perspective. It was then that I understood why I initially struggled to comprehend the concept of Rentacyberfriend.com. The new generation has a unique way of experiencing and interpreting the world around them.

Within a few months, I observed many videos circulating on TikTok and other social media platforms, discussing Rent A Cyber Friend, drawing comparisons with similar projects, and explaining how the platform operates to new users. These individuals undertook the “hard” work of extensive promotion, resulting in a new wave of people spreading the word about the benefits of Rent A Cyber Friend. As a result, we reached a milestone of 100,000 new registered members.

CS: As you may know, Francesco is always focused on the business aspect, so this pivotal moment led to the establishment of RENT A CYBER FRIEND, Inc. (laughs). I distinctly recall a Wall Street Journal journalist contacting us for an interview. Francesco attempted to dissuade her from publishing anything for a while since the platform was still in its BETA stage. We were diligently assessing and refining its functionality and overall performance.

The concept had already proven successful. Today, even without significant advertising or promotion, including on social media, we still boast over 800,000 registered members, with a daily influx of 7,000 to 9,000 new profiles awaiting approval. And our new app is coming up by the end of September.

For instance, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is selling off almost 2.2 million square feet of office space it recently acquired in Manhattan. This decision to not renew leases for 250,000 square feet in Hudson Yards and 200,000 square feet on Park Avenue South comes after massive cutbacks that affected nearly a fourth of its New York State staff.

Similar to this, Spotify is actively looking to sublease five of the sixteen levels in the 4 World Trade Center that it had leased six years prior. In addition, Roku is releasing a fourth of the 240,000 square feet it had just purchased in Times Square. Another level of difficulty was added by the COVID-19 pandemic.
