Ye Kaisheng, a TCM practitioner, believes TCM can introduce to the world with innovative clinical practices

Chinese medicine has a long and fascinating history passed down through countless generations of experience. The heirs must respect the results from the hands of the ancestors and try to summarize these rich experiences in their way for the modern practice of Chinese medicine. And Dr. Ye Kaisheng is the one who has passed on since his grandfather is also a TCM practitioner; it made him familiar with TCM at a very young age, which is crucial for learning TCM because it heavily relies on hands-on experience as a TCM practitioner for more than 20 years expertise in Chinese medicine and acupuncture. He left the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. During his time at the First Hospital Affiliated to Zhejiang University School of Medicine, he has accumulated a wealth of clinical and diagnostic experience, and he believes that Chinese medicine should keep pace with the times as well as Modern Medicine, and innovate through inheritance. He founded his clinics in Hangzhou, Kanghui Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Clinic and Hehui Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Clinic, and an NPO called Zaikang organization to meet the different demands of patients. Although he chooses to quit the big organization, he thinks it is worth it because he feels more honorable working in his clinics.

The relationship with patients is much closer than the hospital, and he can have more time to communicate with every patient to understand their symptoms and demands. “It is important to get along with patients and try to satisfy their needs. I need long-term work to build reputation of TCM. Even in China some people don’t trust TCM because TCM doesn’t take effect until some periods, and it depends on long-time observations of patients. Sometimes even the smallest changes in symptoms can affect diagnosis, therefore the immediate self-report of patients is vital. That’s why you want them to have more trust in you and it can make sure they insist on seeing you. And that is also the reason for establishing the Zaikang organization in the Pengbu community, and some patients suffering from sub-health problems feel frustrated when they go to hospital because their problem can’t be solved. Western medical doctors often tell them they don’t have an obvious problem, but they are still feeling uncomfortable. That’s the situation where TCM comes useful. We can talk like friends in Zaikang organization, so I can help them with TCM solutions. I feel glad to do something in my community, and people in my community can get closer because of this organization, “Ye Kaisheng continues, “I research not only other’s outcome, but the clinical practice of myself, because I know that whenever I spend time to get clear of practices, it is meaningful and that I can always help patients. There is an old Chinese saying ‘sharpening the scalpel is not wrong.”

Dr. Ye Kaisheng serves as a member of China’s top TCM associations. Currently, he is a member of the Chinese Society of Traditional Chinese Medicine (CSTCM), Cross-Straits Medicine Exchange Association (CSMEA) and the Chinese Society of Sub-health Association (CSAHA). He is also an editorial board member of the Journal of Advances in Medicine Science. After serving as a member, he actively undertook the responsibility of training future practitioners, he edited the “Essence of Chinese Medicine Disease Diagnosis and Treatment” as a textbook for teaching interns, and it has been commended for its clear structure and easy-to-understand. He says, “Climbing the peak of medicine is slow work, my experience accumulated over the years is a treasure of Chinese medicine. I want to do my best to teach it to more students in my lifetime, in order to carry forward the progress of Chinese medical research. It is under the inheritance and perseverance of generations, so Chinese medicine can stand for thousands of years. I must participate in it.”

With exquisite acupuncture medical skills to alleviate the pain of thousands of patients, Dr. Ye Kai-sheng has been specializing in acupuncture and moxibustion therapy for many years. He invented the “electronic massage system of bandage for Chinese medicine acupoint.” And it obtains a national patent, because of its use of his unique herbal medicine in acupuncture. He uses this invention to treat irritable bowel syndrome with a combination of traditional Chinese medicine and has achieved good results. It also has been used for treating chronic gastrointestinal dysfunction and chronic neck, shoulder, back, and leg pain for more than 16,000 cases. “I do have a solution for some well-known formidable diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome that Modern Medicine cannot deal with. Acupuncture has good results on it with a combination of traditional Chinese medicine; more than 90% of patients tell me they got huge improvements in symptoms, and their quality of life is definitely better.” For example, in the case of a frozen shoulder and herniated disc, surgical adhesion release is often used to treat the frozen shoulder and discoscopy is used to remove the herniated disc. However, many patients still suffer from pain. At this time, he uses the combination of specific acupuncture points with his rich experience in acupuncture techniques, and the patient’s pain symptoms will soon be reduced or eliminated. Dr. Ye Kaisheng has unique theories and therapeutic practices in acupuncture and acupoint grouping. He believes in the traditional Chinese medical concept that a healthy body must have good energy circulation. When the energy stagnates in one place, people will feel sick of that part of the body. “So the acupuncture therapy is the most intuitive solution for that; it is more controllable and safer than medicine; it doesn’t have some side effects that can take place in other parts of the body. Because when the needle goes to that part of the body, it can soothe the symptoms only at that certain part.”

Dr. Ye Kai-sheng has always been actively exploring the new way for TCM and modern acupuncture techniques. “Many people think that TCM is all about using the prescriptions left by our ancestors, and we cannot create anything on our own. In fact, this impression is wrong. Any discipline needs to move forward and is constantly discovering new things, and so is TCM. For example, we don’t even discover some diseases like irritable bowel syndrome in ancient times, no matter Modern or Chinese medicine. But we try to find a way to cure it today. So that’s why I want to the other parts of the world to accept TCM more. Especially I believe USA is an inclusive country, and I have faith for the future development of TCM in the USA. And I have a future project for opening a TCM clinic in the USA and let everyone try it out.”
