His father, an accomplished amateur painter, shared his passion for art and knowledge by taking him to museums, filling their home with his work, and at the young age of 6 teaching him how to paint. “My work is influenced both by the intimate proximity of art in my everyday life as a child and my profound respect for the canon of art history.” Says Sanders.

Uniting Tradition and Innovation

As a largely self-taught artist with an innate passion for visual expression⎻Sanders mixes the traditional tools and techniques with the latest digital art technologies to create unique, striking works that blur the lines between abstraction and figuration. He continued to nurture his talent through formal education, studying fine arts at George Washington University and participating in other courses and exhibitions which helped him discover his distinctive artistic voice, setting the stage for a remarkable career ahead. “I am interested in visual languages that exist outside of the boundaries of art history. I use oil on canvas, I draw, I collage, and I use printmaking to deepen my skills while also experimenting with new media. I strive to find a voice that honors the ground-breaking artists of the past while creating a visual language of my own that reflects and responds to the present moment.”

His pieces are distinguished from the crowd, with incredible depictions for the depths of the human condition exploring themes of love and loss and meaning, truly captivating those passing by as they explore his work on gigantic canvas frames. But not only does his work set him apart, but his discipline, tenacity and student mentality to commit to furthering his learning and technique. As space and time melt away when Sanders is at work in his home studio of Manhattan Beach, he grabs the attention of those who have broken down the doors for artists before him to impact the world. 

Recognition and Influence in the Art World

Artists and creators like Julienne Johnson, who just recently wrapped the 22nd Japan International Art Exchange Exhibition as the producer/curator for the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art. “It took only one studio visit and five half-started figurative paintings for me to commit to a body of work with only one subject and a grayscale color theme. Six months later, over 40 paintings were almost dry. This is routine for Eric Sanders.  I believe this is his most aggressive work to date. I wanted to be a part of it: the first curator to give him a solo museum show – because he’s ready.”

Deep Emotional Themes in Sanders’ Work

Sanders’ work often explores themes of love, with his wife and muse Anna being the center of many of his pieces. At his most recent exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum he debuted  his series “Annamotion” titled after Ann. He took viewers on the journey exploring topics of dynamic femininity, loss, identity, and the quest for meaning. His paintings evoke a sense of introspection, inviting viewers to reflect on their own lives and the world around them.
