How Trent Griffin-Braaf Is Empowering Underrepresented Communities Through Tech Valley Shuttle

The United States has one of the worst track records for reintroducing convicted criminals into society. According to the US Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE), federal and state prisons release over 600,000 inmates each year, and local jails cycle through approximately 9 million. Moreover, the ASPE’s records show that within the next three years, two out of three of those inmates will be rearrested, and over 50% will be reimprisoned

Inmates leaving prison realize quickly that the odds are stacked against them. “I teach businesses how to offer second chances to people who have made mistakes,” says Trent Griffin-Braaf, CEO and founder of Tech Valley Shuttle. “I collaborate with them to create welcoming, inclusive, and fair cultures. As someone who has been through the system and emerged successfully into the business sector, I can help people in similar situations do the same.”

 

How Trent Griffin-Braaf learned the value of second chances

As a young boy whose parents both battled addiction issues, Griffin-Braaf was forced to grow up faster than most. The tragedy of his father’s early death made a rocky childhood even more tumultuous. 

“By the age of 19, I was walking a dark road,” Griffin-Braaf recalls. “My path led all the way to the criminal justice system and a 12-year sentence.”

However, sometimes the darkest moments make way for the light. Griffin-Braaf committed himself to become a better person while incarcerated. “Those years changed my life,” he remembers. “I dedicated my days to self-growth and education. At times, the oppressive prison environment made me want to give up, but I persevered.”

After serving seven years between prison and parole, Griffin-Braaf emerged from the system a new man. He defied his past, his disadvantages, and the odds to reinvent himself and lay the foundation for a better future. 

Griffin-Braaf’s incarceration left him with a desire not only to improve himself but to better the lives of people around him.

“I refused to allow my past to define who I was or who I could become,” says Griffin-Braaf. “I responded to adversity by using my story to inspire others to work toward transformation. Today, Griffin-Braaf is a business leader with a passion for positive community impact. He launched Tech Valley Shuttle in 2016 to offer Upstate New York residents safe and trustworthy transportation, but that is not all he wants from his company.

As the founder of a certified minority-owned business, Griffin-Braaf represented Tech Valley Shuttle at a minority- and women-owned business (MWBE) conference in Albany, NY. While there, he educated himself, networked, and secured a business loan from Pursuit to scale the company.

Helping communities solve unemployment problems 

“Some people in the business sector say they grow by building bridges,” Griffin-Braaf says. “I prefer to look for tunnels. We dig deep to find unmet transportation needs in our community. Then we help customers and grow our company by meeting those needs.”

Antisemitism has a long and painful history, and its impact on Jewish women’s rights cannot be ignored. From systemic discrimination and violence to everyday microaggressions, antisemitism has impeded the progress of Jewish women in achieving equality and safety.

A report by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) found that antisemitic incidents in the United States increased by 12% in 2020, with a particularly sharp rise in physical assaults. This increase in antisemitic incidents is concerning, as it suggests that the prejudices against Jewish people are still very much present in our society.

Antisemitism has a particularly insidious effect on Jewish women, who face a unique set of challenges. They often experience intersectional discrimination due to their gender, religion, and ethnicity. Jewish women are also more likely to face online harassment and abuse than their male counterparts.

Antisemitism also harms Jewish women’s reproductive rights. A recent report by the Jewish Women’s Foundation of New York found that Jewish women have experienced discrimination when seeking reproductive healthcare services. They report being pressured to undergo sterilization or to abort pregnancies due to genetic conditions that are more common in the Jewish community.

In addition to facing discrimination in healthcare, Jewish women also face obstacles in the workplace. They are often subject to microaggressions, such as jokes or comments about their appearance or religion. These microaggressions can create a hostile work environment and limit opportunities for career advancement.

So, what can be done to combat antisemitism and protect Jewish women’s rights?

First and foremost, education is key. People must be educated about the history and impact of antisemitism, including the intersectional nature of discrimination against Jewish women. Educational institutions, community organizations, and workplaces should offer training and resources to help combat antisemitism.

In addition, individuals must speak out against antisemitism and other forms of bigotry. Silence only serves to perpetuate discrimination and hate. Allies must stand up for Jewish women and other marginalized groups, both online and in real life.

Furthermore, policies and laws must be put in place to protect Jewish women’s rights. Governments and organizations should work to ensure that healthcare is inclusive and non-discriminatory. Workplace policies should explicitly prohibit discrimination based on religion and gender, and organizations should hold individuals accountable for discriminatory behavior.

Finally, community support is crucial. Jewish women’s organizations, such as Elluminate, provide a vital network of support for Jewish women facing discrimination and harassment. Community members – practitioners and philanthropists – must come together to support and uplift Jewish women, creating a safe and inclusive space for all.

Through education, speaking out against hate, enacting policies and laws, and supporting each other, we can work towards a more just and equitable future.

One way to address antisemitism is through education and awareness campaigns that highlight the contributions of Jewish women throughout history. By shining a light on their achievements, society can recognize their value and importance, rather than focusing solely on negative stereotypes and prejudices. The Jewish Women’s Archive has an encyclopedia of women (historical and current) that can assist education and awareness.

Another approach is to promote interfaith dialogue and understanding, encouraging people from different backgrounds to come together to learn from one another and foster greater understanding and acceptance. This can involve participating in interfaith events, hosting community discussions, and building relationships across religious and cultural divides.

Additionally, it is important for governments and institutions to take a stand against antisemitism and to implement policies and programs that promote equality and inclusion. This includes enforcing anti-discrimination laws, providing resources and support for victims of hate crimes, and promoting diversity in the workplace and in other areas of society.

Ultimately, lifting up the work and voices of Jewish women so that their representation is clear will begin to overcome antisemitism. How has COVID-19 affected workplace harassment?

The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected every aspect of life, including work, education, health, and social and cultural events. The effects of the health crisis on the world’s economy and public health have been largely discussed, but there are equally important issues that were less talked about, and workplace harassment is one of them.   

Discrimination and harassment in the workplace have always been sensitive and difficult to address issues for companies and organizations. When the coronavirus outbreak began, it was expected that the transition to a work-from-home work model, which many businesses had to resort to, would put an end to many of the harmful actions categorized as workplace harassment or at least reduce the likelihood of remote employees being treated in a discriminatory manner. While that may have been the case for some employees, the pandemic did not stop workplace harassment in its tracks but rather altered the nature and increased certain types of discrimination.  

As a New Jersey workplace discrimination attorney at Castronovo & McKinney explains, it is illegal for all employers to discriminate against an employee or job applicant on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, physical or mental disability, age, gender, sexual orientation, and other protected characteristics. So, let’s see what happened during the Covid-19 pandemic.  

Discrimination based on age 

Soon after the spread of the virus, the World Health Organization warned that older adults are more susceptible to Covid-19 infection due to the physiological changes associated with aging. While both employers and employees should be aware of the increased risks for older employees, it does not mean this should impact in any way the way employers treat or interact with workers from this category. It has been reported that some employees inquired more often about the health of older staff members, cut back their working hours, created hostile work environments or went as far as terminating their contracts.  

Racial discrimination  

Given that the pandemic originated in China, there was a lot of hate directed toward Asians around the world, as many people blamed them for spreading the virus. This saw an increase in racial discrimination against employees of Asian origin, regardless of if they had any relation with China or not. Many Asian workers reported being more closely monitored for coronavirus symptoms than their Non Asian peers, being marginalized, having their hours cut or receiving hostile treatment from co-workers simply because of their race.  

Disability discrimination  

The work climate also changed for some employees with disabilities. In many situations, the company they were working for failed to provide adequate accommodation to give them equal opportunities and allow them to fully do their job. It was also noted that some employees treated disabled staff members differently because they perceived them as being more likely to contract the virus and spread it in the workplace.  

Harassment of remote workers  

Employees who had to work remotely were not necessarily sheltered from workplace harassment and discrimination. Remote work made it more difficult to establish clear boundaries between personal and professional life, leaving the door open for sexual harassment.
