By staying optimistic and resilient, you can inspire your mentee to adopt the same attitude and approach to their own challenges. Encourage them to embrace their mistakes and failures as opportunities for growth and learning and celebrate their successes and achievements along the way. 

3. Listen Carefully. Never undervalue the value of being a good listener. Listening carefully is one of the most important aspects of effective communication, and it’s especially crucial in a mentoring relationship. As a mentor, it’s essential to listen to your mentee’s thoughts, concerns, and ideas, without interrupting or dismissing them.

Doing so will allow you to gain a deeper understanding of your mentee’s perspective and needs and provide more relevant and impactful guidance. It also helps to show your mentee that you value and respect their opinions, which can strengthen the trust and rapport between you. As a mentor, it is your job to do everything possible to keep them interested. Listening to their thoughts and ideas is a great way to earn their buy-in.

4. Set realistic goals and expectations. Determine your mentee’s needs and then work together to figure out creative ways to address those issues. Take small steps if necessary and set realistic goals. Monitor your advancement and continue pushing ahead. 

If something does not work out, switch your approach or establish a new goal. Always be encouraging. The purpose of mentorship is to offer help by example in a way that offers unconditional support.

5. Have fun. Mentorship stems from relationship-building so have fun as your mentor-mentee relationship progresses. Learning can take place just about anywhere, so whether you spend time chatting in a park, go for a bicycle ride or look for books in a library, you are building trust and ensuring your relationship moves forward in a positive way.

In conclusion, successful mentoring requires a positive attitude, active listening, realistic goal setting, and a friendly demeanor. By following these tips, you can build a strong relationship with your mentee, and help them grow and achieve their goals. Remember that as a mentor, you are not there to dictate, but rather to guide and advise, and ultimately make a difference in their lives. As my conversation with Mikhail Peleg revealed, the value of mentorship is immeasurable, and the impact that you can have on a young person’s life can last a lifetime. In a modest home in Illinois, Larry Pinson, Sr. meticulously pours over the piles of paper that document his life’s most recent venture: a radical blueprint to reform the American pay system.  

The Vietnam War veteran, retired Major of the Illinois National Guard, and former U.S. Postal Service employee has penned a controversial book, ‘C.H.A.P.P.S.’ – an acronym for ‘Clockable Hours Application Process and Pay System.’ In it, he outlines an ambitious proposal that could potentially double Americans’ salaries, eradicate poverty, and eliminate the need for governmental stimulus packages.  

The core concept of CHAPPS was born amid the turmoil and ceaseless uncertainty of Pinson’s service in Vietnam. His revelation came like a lightning bolt in the murky jungles of Southeast Asia: despite working, or being on call, 24 hours a day, 168 hours a week, he and his fellow soldiers were only paid for a fraction of their service. It was an inequity that gnawed at him and inspired a lifelong quest for wage justice.  

Through the lens of CHAPPS, Pinson takes aim at what he perceives as deeply ingrained inequities in the current pay system. His criticism is scathing, his insights revealing, and his proposed solutions nothing short of revolutionary. He believes that in the current system, the benefits are weighted heavily in favor of employers at the expense of the average worker.  

Reflecting on his 14 years at the U.S. Postal Service, Pinson unveils a hidden truth behind the payslips, demonstrating that workers are often paid for only a fraction of their time. CHAPPS, as envisioned by Pinson, seeks to rectify this imbalance. His proposed pay system is about more than just money—it’s about restoring agency to the American worker. It’s about eliminating unemployment, eradicating the need for overtime, and guaranteeing every worker a salary that truly reflects their time and efforts.  

This is not a utopian dream but a practical plan based on personal experience, a deeply ingrained sense of justice, and a rigorous analysis of our current systems.
