Rising above the low-budget action and horror polluting the current stream and scream-scape, Johnny Hickey’s independent films have found their own niche of drug-fueled crime, drama, and horror. He’s not an A-lister, but rather a creative who has forged a following of thousands with award-winning work executed on small budgets.
Hickey’s first film, Oxy Morons, is based on true-to-life events that took place during a chapter of his life where he was caught up in a mess of drugs and crime. Losing many friends and relatives to the opioid crisis and nearly getting himself killed after being thrown from an 80-foot foot cliff, the Boston native turned his life around and chased his dreams of filmmaking. His debut revealed the underbelly of the budding problem and showed the collateral damage of those caught in its grip.
After Oxy Morons scored big at the actual box office with a string of sold-out theater showings on the East Coast, the film found its first streaming venue at Netflix and for two years built a cult following of people who could relate to its subject matter as well as those who fiend for crime dramas and thick New England accents.
Johnny’s second feature, Habitual, starts off as a crime drama, but (spoiler alert) morphs into a dark and twisted psychological horror drawing on the fake pill market filled with the deadly fentanyl that is erasing addicts. The movie was originally scheduled for a 10-city tour that was canceled due to the pandemic, still Hickey pressed on, landed multiple streaming deals, and even won a few festivals on the strength of its message and originality.
Johnny’s next project, currently titled Methadone Mile, is based on a dysfunctional family caught up in the heart of the epidemic in Boston, where the homeless and addicted population exists in a Bermuda Triangle of drug clinics, shelters, and the county jail. The film is based on an original story by Andrew Rotondi and stars Justina Valentine (MTV’s Wild N Out, Fuhgeddaboudit Christmas), Todd Rotondi (As The World Turns, Howl), and Boston comedy legend Lenny Clarke. Methadone Mile is executive produced by Todd Rotondi with Sugar Studio’s Jijo Reed, Chris Redkey, and Robert Turner. Johnny’s good friend Jordan Wisely (MTV’s The Challenge, Just Drive) will produce with AJ Cutler on as cinematographer.
