How Entrepreneur Dr. Joel Gould is Asking Humanity to Join Its Tribe

Dr. Joel Gould is a study in stark contrast.

Take, for example, his book, “The Modern Epidemic: Insomnia, Sleep Disorders and Chronic Disease; A New Paradigm.”

The tone can be a bit, well, ominous. And that tone fits in perfectly with Dr. Gould’s warnings about modern health.

“Knowledge is power, and the information in this book will help you to understand your own biology and make choices that support natural and organic health,” reads “The Modern Epidemic. “These days, most people are actively trying to eat well and exercise to be fit and healthy, but we have been given the wrong information about how our bodies truly work. It’s time to end the deception and manipulation by the powers who profit from our illness.”

Once there, you will see dazzling graphics and charming cartoon characters who illustrate Dr. Gould’s lighter side, his determination, his quest to deliver entertainment—and possibly education—to young people worldwide. The goal—initially online but eventually in the metaverse—is to illuminate the factors that dictate good health. But this isn’t a boring school lesson, it’s more like “Schoolhouse Rock” on steroids.

Deuteriumrecords.com showcases dazzling characters that include Marty Mitochondria, Polly Polymerase, Cathy Cholesterol and, of course, DJ Deuterium.

Then there are the compelling, all-consuming, upbeat, animated videos that bring Dr Gould’s characters—who also include “the Foundational Four:” Vitamin D3, Vitamin K2, Sulfur and Magnesium—to life.

Dr. Gould also brings these characters to life outside of animation, with his real-life band, The Foundational Four.

The ensemble—Dr. Gould plays guitar and keyboards as his alter ego, DJ Marty Mitochondria—performs catchy and positive songs in the real world. The Foundational Four specializes in Electronic Dance Music, which DJ Marty Mitochondria mixes together for, as Dr. Gould described it, “a live performance unlike anything out there.”

The place where the different sides of Dr. Gould meet is a place of concern and warning. But there is also plenty of light-hearted sharing, delivered with no-strings-attached education, that in no uncertain terms takes a back seat to the entertainment. Welcome to Dr. Gould’s “Heroes of Light”—a cartoon character endeavor and outgrowth of his “Modern Hunters Gatherers” initiative.

“Humans evolved to be hunter-gatherers, living in tune with Mother Nature, and their natural ecosystem,” Dr. Gould writes on modernhuntergatherers.com. “Modern humans have become disconnected from their natural habitat and evolutionary origins, and are suffering separation anxiety.”

He continues, “In today’s hectic modern world, we live a very different life than our ancestors did. Understanding our evolutionary origins allows us to give our environmentally-sensitive bodies the right information for health.”

As for the “Heroes of Light,” Dr. Gould said they are a response to existing fantasy characters for young people that leave him underwhelmed. Rather than creating animated characters to sell toys, Dr. Gould said he strives to tell a cohesive story.

Take, for example, his very own Polly Polymerase.

“Polly Polymerase is this strong female character,” Dr. Gould said. “She’s an enzyme, and this enzyme is really special. She’s confident and  doesn’t make many mistakes—maybe one per million. And a polymerase is what makes every single thing in your body—hair, skin, nails, proteins. That’s the character that I want my little girl to be thinking about, rather than a plastic horse whose hair you comb.”

The storyline around which all of this revolves is that Mother Nature is not being obeyed or respected; and our biology is being damaged and overwhelmed by modern technology and lifestyles. She is asking these vitamin and mineral characters to reboot, reimagine and ramp up their authority and celebrity status to get kids and adults interested in their health; and the health of the planet.

“No matter what you believe,” Dr. Gould said. “You can’t fool Mother Nature.”

And while there is plenty to learn here, Dr. Gould doesn’t want anyone—parents and their children especially—to consider any of this as traditional learning.

“I want to educate people without them thinking about it as education,” he said. “The minute you tell anyone, kids or adults, ‘Hey, it’s time to put away the fun and games and get to work to learn something,’ no one is interested.”

Dr. Gould, quite simply, has a message to share about health and wellness.

“But I am not telling you what to do,” he said. “I am sharing the science in a way that will allow you, at any age, to understand how the physical world around us is structured, and works.

“You can consider my work ‘Infotainment,’ as I have broken down complex biological science into easily digestible, bite-sized chunks of content expressed by brightly colored cartoons. You will be singing the words and doing the TikTok dance before you realize you understand how our bodies utilize something like mRNA, to produce proteins that keep us healthy”

Asked why he took all of this on, Dr. Gould said, “This is my life’s work. I am the right person at this moment in history to present this new scientific information that is ‘Quantum Biology.’”

Dr. Gould also references medical information that came out nearly a century ago regarding jaw and dental growth and development; and the immune system. The information, Dr. Gould said, was cast aside because it focused on vitamins and minerals rather than medications.

But its absence from learning and education, Dr. Gould continued, has resulted in millions of people having improper craniofacial growth and jaw development; and a lack of room for our 32 teeth, among other health issues.

He pointed to his own health challenges as a child and young man. These included getting his tonsils out at age 4. Another health condition that Dr. Gould struggled with was Crohn’s disease, which he was diagnosed with at age 14.

“I lost 34 years of my life to this illness, where it shaped every decision that I made,” he said. “I created a life designed around my disease at the age of 14. At the age of 48, I completely reversed my Crohn’s Disease by supplementing several key vitamins and making some lifestyle changes.”

Though he doesn’t call it medical advice, you can read his story, replete with links to scientific studies that support his suggested therapies, in his eBook, called “Reverse Crohn’s.” Click here to learn more.

“My main focus is to simply, easily and naturally allow parents to help their children have a normal jaw, airway growth and sleep,” Dr. Gould said. “It’s only in sleep that children grow and develop. We are facing a massive epidemic of pediatric sleep disorders being misdiagnosed as Attention Deficit Disorder. A child’s mouth-breathing disorder definitely affects their natural growth and overall health. Understanding the root cause of this terrifying new syndrome is critical for the future of our species.”

All of this can be traced back to Dr. Gould’s “Modern Hunters Gatherers” initiative, and his “Heroes of Light.”

Speaking of his characters, he said, “If you get to know them, you’re going to learn about science. But it’s not going to be taught to you. It’s just going to come along with enjoyment of the paradigm. This is a health and wellness lifestyle paradigm that kids and adults should be excited to join. They should be excited to join their tribe—the Modern Hunter Gatherers.”

A Concert to Calm the Mind at Carnegie Hall

Can you tell us about the musical performance coming up on June 6th at Carnegie Hall? You’ve mentioned it’s one-of-a-kind. What is it about?

If you are tired or stressed, our show One, A Healing and Vibrant Concert to Calm the Mind, is meant for you. Nothing is more important than to calm your mind and reboot your energy, especially in these crazy times when our brains are constantly running. In the show, we will meditate, pray, sing, and dance. So it will be more than a concert, for sure.

What are some of the elements involved that make this performance more than just a concert?

This isn’t just a show. It’s a spiritual experience. We can immediately shift the mood of anyone when we sing and play. That’s the supreme power of the music, it resonates soul to soul! Neuroscience has always fascinated me. A simple vibration can modify the neuro-chemical system and replace cortisol (the stress hormone) with happy and calm hormones like dopamine and serotonin. The music and songs we bring to the show will be very calming and very energetic, shamanic even.

How would you describe the setlist that will be performed?

We will start with calming songs, where I’ll be singing with a string orchestra. It will be amazing, especially with the emotion of the musicians like the young virtuoso Ayna Ivanov, who has performed many times at Carnegie Hall! The acoustics of this iconic theater is perfect for these intimate spiritual moments, to truly feel the deepness of each note.

The show will continue to evolve, introducing the finesse of the music director for Earth, Wind & Fire, and keyboardist, Myron McKinley, along with accomplished cellist Ro Rowan, who has played on over 600 projects credits, including Avatar: The Way of Water, Top Gun: Maverick, The Lion King, and has worked with countless artists such as Billie Eilish, Adele, Hans Zimmer, Sting, and more, so it is an absolute privilege to be working with them.

From there, the show will become a feast with all of the musicians like Stacy Lamont Sydnor on drums, Paul Pesco on guitar, Ian Martin on bass, Lama Tashi Norbu for some mantras, Téa Licon, and Summer Rona.

You’ve been performing since you were 9 years old. How do you approach each performance to keep things fresh?

I keep my soul young like a child. Every time I go on stage, I rediscover every note, but to do that, there is a secret.

How do you work on developing more as a musician?

Most of the time, I don’t rehearse, and the same goes for the musicians that play with me. They are exceptional virtuosos! Of course, we do sound checks and ensure all the technical details are in order, but we prefer not to rehearse too much. It helps us keep a very fresh mind when we perform on stage, and we play like it’s the last performance of our lives. In a way, I suppose you could say that’s how we work on developing!

How would you describe what makes a good concert for you?

I consider a concert good if we do not understand what’s happening, suddenly we’re crying, dancing, singing, and we feel a profound emotion grander than ourselves. Miles Davis talked about The Blue Note, and Carlos Santana referred to the moment as “The Juicy Note”. I come from a spiritual life, so for us, it’s when we feel the “Grace” or the divine energy. At that moment, the concert becomes more than a concert, it becomes what we call in psychology a “Starry Hour”, a souvenir that we’ll hold in our hearts forever.

It definitely sounds like a unique and invigorating experience! How do you incorporate meditation into the vocal performance?

I will be guiding a short meditation before the show, but truly it’s all vibration; nothing is separate. To sing or to talk is vibration, which helps replace negative hormones with the positive ones. Whether we’re singing and playing or talking in meditation, we are promoting our minds to generate happy hormones!

Sounds like a super calming experience! Are you concerned about guests falling asleep?

Hahaha…I have a funny story for you. During my first concert at Carnegie Hall in 2016, I guided a long meditation. I opened my eyes, and I saw all the audience was in a profound sleep! However, meditation, it’s an active form of sleep. In Yoga Nidra, it means that your brain is still very aware and is the moment you upgrade your cognitive process as you’re deeply relaxed.

This year, I will guide a 1-minute meditation. To calm our mind before a concert or performance is like washing our hands before eating. We detox all the energies and fatigue from our week, and then 60 seconds after our meditative time, we will be ready to truly feel the emotion and groove of the show!

Some might not know that the show at Carnegie Hall on June 6th is not only debuting the performance but is also the launch of OMMM. Can you tell us a little about what OMMM is?

Michelle Narciso-Krutz, María Alphonse, and I co-founded OMMM, a world movement to calm the mind. We will produce immersive films, a wellness channel, shows, an app, and more resources to help everyone calm their mind. It’s also very important for us to make it accessible to as many people as possible.

Why do you feel it is important that people be able to calm their minds?

If we don’t calm our minds, how can we love, work, be grateful, and appreciate our friends and family? Nothing is more important than taking care of our minds. This needs to be a priority in current times. We live in a world where we strive to be creative, productive, and efficient, but we are guided to do the opposite! We are taught to be stressed and tired. We must re-program our life and our values. Our world has totally changed, and now being successful doesn’t mean being famous, but to be able to be calm, grateful, and helpful.

Do you believe we can create a better, calmer, and less violent world?

Yes, but we can’t do it if we continue being zombies day in and day out. We must change and calm our minds. As Steve Jobs said before he died, “Don’t educate your children to become rich. Educate them to be happy.”
