Highlighting the Significance of AI Ethics for People of Color – Calvin Lawrence and Hidden in White Sight

Artificial intelligence (AI) permeates almost every aspect of modern life due to the ubiquitous use of technological devices and services, including smartphones, computers, facial recognition devices or software, automobiles, navigation maps, and chat or digital assistants. Although people interact with and use AI incessantly, they fail to realize or acknowledge the potential risks and hazards stemming from ethical issues related to the technology. For example, a prominent ethical issue with AI in self-driving cars is assigning responsibility for accidents or privacy concerns in data collection and use by AI tools in various circumstances. AI ethics is a critical issue even though many people fail to realize its significance in their lives or the long-term effects on their health or well-being.

AI ethics are also crucial for people of color, even if they do not recognize the significance due to the lack of neutrality in AI decisions or outcomes. A primary ethical issue with artificial intelligence is that it is biased and discriminatory rather than neutral or impartial, as many people may believe. AI reinforces and aggravates systemic racism through biased outcomes that disproportionately favor people of particular races, genders, and ethnicities. The racism in AI outcomes is mainly because of the human biases and prejudice embedded in the data and algorithms used for machine learning and AI. AI ethics is a prominent issue for people of color due to its role in deepening systemic racism. Prominent AI specialist Calvin Lawrence highlights the significance of AI ethics for people of color through his book.

Calvin D. Lawrence is a distinguished engineer and Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of Responsible and Trustworthy AI Global Markets at IBM. He is also a member of the AI ethics board at IBM and the author of Hidden in White Sight: How AI Empowers and Deepens Systemic Racism. Lawrence argues that AI ethics are crucial for people of color due to the role of AI in aggravating systemic racism. He has over 25 years of experience in engineering, applications and system programming, enterprise architecture, research, and artificial intelligence. Lawrence has also authored over fifty articles, white papers, and books on topics covering technology and artificial intelligence. He also worked closely with several teams to develop AI models and study AI ethics from various perspectives. His substantial experience and interaction with AI models and close examination of discriminatory AI outcomes in various settings make Lawrence an expert in AI ethics.

The book “Hidden in White Sight: How AI Empowers and Deepens Systemic Racism” highlights the discriminatory elements in AI that disproportionately favor or work against particular races and genders. Lawrence argues in the book that although many people perceive AI as a neutral and impartial technology, it involves numerous inherent flaws in the algorithm and human data. Human bias and prejudice seep into AI because people provide the data and information used by AI for acquiring knowledge, learning, and making decisions. Although discriminatory elements are not purposefully integrated into the AI mechanism, the unintentional biases inherent in people due to social influences permeate AI algorithms and lead to racially biased outcomes. Hidden in White Sight implies that AI deepens and aggravates systemic racism by restricting or refraining people from particular racial backgrounds from public or private services. For example, AI models may disproportionately favor white individuals in loan processing, college application, and healthcare or insurance management due to the biased algorithms underlying such processes.

AI ethics play a primary role in alleviating and eliminating discriminatory elements from AI while upholding values that promote equality and fairness. Systemic racism adversely affects people of color due to a lack of opportunities and inferior academic, healthcare, and social outcomes than their white counterparts. AI aggravates systemic racism by promoting disproportionate outcomes due to the human stereotypes and prejudice embedded in AI algorithms and data. However, in his book Hidden in White Sight, Calvin Lawrence implies that increasing awareness and voices regarding AI ethics can significantly improve equality and diversity. Lawrence also asserts that AI ethics should be a primary concern for people of color because AI deepens and aggravates systemic racism against racial minorities. People need to understand how AI affects their social outcomes due to their racial or social backgrounds and how AI ethics can help improve racial and social equality. Calvin Lawrence highlights the significance of AI ethics for people of color by implying the role of AI in systemic racism through his book Hidden in White Sight: How AI Empowers and Deepens Systemic Racism.

Sarah Jones – The altruistic form of multimedia entrepreneurship in journalism

The fast-paced evolution of information technology and social media has led to a parallel shift in what it is like to be a journalist in an increasingly globalized news sector. Journalism as a career has grown increasingly ambiguous as it strives to keep up with the expanding information and communication technology field. As a result, modern journalism is being pushed to adapt by developing new journalistic roles, skills, and practices. One may even argue that a whole new identity is required to reconcile traditional ideas of openness and impartiality with modern society’s burgeoning multimedia interests.

It comes as no surprise that a worldwide network of information sharing has increased the exposure of the general public through several information sources ranging from social media applications to blogs and webpages. With so much information and narrative sources available, it’s easy to lose sight of what it takes to be a professional journalist. When it comes to professional and dedicated journalists, many journalists make it to the list, and Sarah Jones is undoubtedly among those.

Jones is the founder and president of Sarah Jones Reports LLC. – a multimedia company she founded in 2010 to widen the lens of her journalistic responsibilities. Jones is skilled in multimedia journalism, a new and innovative genre of journalism that focuses on the rapid development of technology to assist newsrooms in adapting to today’s convergent news environment. Jones has given 15 years to this profession, and she has made it the mission of her life to bring real news based on facts to the table. Out of her passion for delivering factual information to the public, Jones films, edits, writes, and produces her own pieces. Her passion and goal drove her to turn her fact-finding into a business and created Sarah Jones Reports LLC. She launched Sarah Jones Reports LLC to make a more informed public based on balanced, factual, and inclusive reporting.

Jones searches for several aspects of each story and how to effectively present it to the audience since every story has two aspects. She possesses a strong knack for storytelling, focusing on all facets, including distinctive imagery, attention-grabbing language, and the ability to tie it all together in such a manner that viewers are drawn into the story.

Jones has long criticized the mainstream media for emphasizing narratives above news journalism. She covers issues that the mainstream media frequently overlooks, even when there is still a lot of material to cover. Jones goes on to present informative report after informative report. To continue her effort in this area, she launched the “Seen and Heard” program to bring underreported stories to the attention of mainstream media. The program’s goal was to give equal exposure to populations who have been marginalized in mainstream media.

Jones has hosted a kids’ podcast called “Sarah Jones Breaks it Down.” Her journalistic podcast is aimed mainly at children to help them understand current affairs and gain digital literacy. Jones’ podcast got a five-star rating from Common Sense Media for providing reliable news information to over 100 million children and families worldwide.

In addition to being a journalist, Jones is also a thought author and has penned a book named “A Kids Book About War.” It’s a good starting point for further in-depth discussions on war with the kids. Jones has written a book so thoughtfully, tenderly, and passionately that even adults may learn a lot from reading it to their children. Her work delves into the fundamental reasons for people fighting in the war. Her book also discusses what war is, why wars start, and what happens after a war. Jones has shared her wealth of knowledge in an attempt to discuss the issue of war with children in an age-appropriate and non-threatening manner.

Jones formerly worked for BBC World Services in England, CNN, TRT in Istanbul, Turkey, and NBC Midwest. Her efforts and unending enthusiasm for social media indicate her drive and love for the industry. Her social media presence has made her a well-known and prolific online writer. During the Sixth Annual Shorty Awards, presented at the New York Times Center, a council of industry insiders chose her as the Best Writer in Social Media. She also envisioned a gathering on World Press Freedom Day, when global citizens and members of the news media community from around the world maintained a one-minute silence to memorialize the journalists who died while bearing witness. Jones founded the Annual International Moment of Silence, an online event to memorialize the deceased journalist, in co-partnership with The United Nations Plus Social Good, Committee to Protect Journalists, The Frontline Club, The National Press Club, Muck Rack, International Association of Press Clubs, James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, Knight Foundation, and Reddit. The event touched nearly nine million people in the first year. In-person, events were organized on a global level.

Mosi Dorbayani on International Law, Cultural Diplomacy, And The New World Order

Mosi Dorbayani — “The new shift in the world is raising interest in informal negotiations, with less emphasis on multilateral treaties.”

The following is the NY Weekly’s exclusive interview with Dr. Mosi Dorbayani, a well-regarded Canadian executive advisor, economist, and Jurist, who is also an award-winning author and songwriter. His new book, titled: ‘Law and Cultural Diplomacy: The Cohabitation of International Law and International Cultural Interactions’ got our editorial’s attention—raising interest in having a brief discussion on a number of current world issues.

NYW: Dr. Dorbayani, welcome to this special edition.

MD: My pleasure.

NYW: Why is our world facing so many conflicts?

MD: Since a multipolar world is emerging, understanding the objectives and negotiating new deals, which may facilitate the transition from a unipolar world to a multipolar one, is increasingly important. Often discussions about multipolarity are biased. How we want the world to evolve may not accord with how the world actually works, and that creates ‘conflict.’

It is often presumed, in a multipolar world, equal powers establish cooperation in such a design that serves their interests in a harmonious and peaceful manner, rather than the overwhelming power of a single political force – the Pax Americana model of the 20th century. Of course, naturally, when Russian and Chinese political figures at Davos (Annual World Economic Forum) speak about a multipolar world, they are speaking about the world they want to see, not the world that exists right now today.

The world they want is the one in which they have a greater share of power than they have right now. And that is not limited to Russia or China. Brazil and India are emerging as regional leaders; their geopolitical importance is overshadowing the current world order.

NYW: What is fascinating about your new book is that you also put the political economy into the context of international law and global organizations such as the UN. Please explain the correlation between the global economy and the new world order.

MD: Clearly, the changes in the global economic order will energize a new multipolar world market, which will bring a new world order through market diversity. The redistribution of power, the expansion of new economic players, Brexit, the rise of nationalism across several states, and the formation of new alliances like China-Russia, and the South America Community of Nations – all are creating new waves demanding change for greater representation in the UN Security Council, World Bank, World Trade Organization, and International Monetary Fund, etc.

NYW: In such a politically intense world, how can international communities reduce tensions?

The geopolitical, mass immigration, trade war, and economic issues (among others) are perhaps manifestations of the competition between the United States and its rising challengers around the world over power – hence, the reason for me to emphasize the role of ‘Cultural Diplomacy’ as skillsets and strategies to reduce tensions and manage conflicts. To enable ‘culture’ to use its “soft power” in a multipolar world, we need to strengthen international cultural relations; we need to support culture as an engine for sustainable social and economic development. We need to promote cultural and intercultural dialogue for peaceful inter-community relations.

NYW: In your latest book, ‘Law and Cultural Diplomacy’ – a research conducted at NOVA School of Law in Lisbon, Portugal, you highlighted the role of culture in forging compliance and noted how culture could influence the rule of law – an aspect that perhaps hasn’t been discussed much before. Please elaborate on that.

MD: As it is commonly known, legal rules are enforced and governed by law; cultural rules, however, are enforced by societal pressures. Legal rules are enforceable by social and governmental institutions, while cultural rules are backed by internal beliefs. While those differences are vivid to any modern society, there is a critical factor here to remember, which is the role of culture in encouraging people to obey legal rules. While the motive and degree of following legal rules are and can indeed be varied, culture can facilitate and encourage compliance with legal rules or even oppose them.

It is simply true that the original source of both legal rules and cultural rules is ‘the need for coexistence; however, cultural formations such as home education, family orientation, social or communal dependency, religious ideologies, thought behaviors and shaped attitudes – could all affect the rule of law. In the context of the law and legal rules, obedience is to submit to the formal authority, but in the context of culture and cultural rules, it is to obey the informal authority of the society, and as history shows us, the informal authority of society has often been powerful enough to assure obedience is in its favor.

NYW: Speaking of law and diplomacy, as a Jurist, tell us how international communities should deal with the new world.

The new multipolar world and its global order require a new mechanism to address disputes. While the formal process of law to tackle disputes may stay effective, the new shift in the world is raising interest in ‘informal negotiations’, ‘political compromises,’ and more ‘diplomacy’ with less emphasis on multilateral treaties. And here is when diplomatic skills and applying Cultural Diplomacy, as mentioned earlier, come into effect.

NYW: Thank you for attending this interview and for sharing your insights with our readers.

MD: Thank you for having me.

Digital Menu Solutions: A Leader in Providing Animated Menu Designs for Restaurants, Franchises, & Commercial Businesses Around USA

Image commercially licensed from Unsplash

Digital menus have become increasingly important to restaurants in recent years, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has changed the way we interact with each other and with businesses, and restaurants have had to adapt quickly to new safety measures and customer expectations. One of the main advantages of digital menus is that they are contactless, which means that customers can view the menu on their own devices without having to touch a physical menu or interact with a server. This reduces the risk of transmission of germs and viruses, which is especially important in a post-pandemic world. It also saves time and increases efficiency, as customers can browse the menu and place their orders directly from their own devices.

In 2019, Dan Feliz, the CEO of Digital Menu Solutions (DMS), along with his wife Olga, came up with an idea to build an affordable digital menu app for restaurants, franchises and commercial businesses around the USA. The couple lost their job due to the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to utilize their free time to build an app that could be deployed to thousands of restaurants at a minimal cost.

Using Amazon Fire Devices as their testing devices, Dan and Olga spent long hours building an app that could compete with the costly monthly fees that other menu companies were charging at that time. After several months of hard work, they finally built a McDonald-style menu that could be deployed to thousands of restaurants with less than $400 in server computing and cloud storage expenses. In addition, they reduced the huge cost of monthly fees from $1,050 to a one-time fee of $249 per TV.

Digital Menu Solutions has come a long way since its inception in 2019. In 2023, the company held more than 10,000 user licenses all over the USA. In addition, the app is available in the Amazon Fire TV store, and DMS is planning to promote its services in other countries very soon.

Dan Feliz has been in the IT and Cyber Technology Industry for over ten years in the United States with reputable businesses like Attrib Solution and Krumsh, the parking app that is currently under testing and will hit the market in their re-launch by 2027.

DMS offers a wide range of animated menu designs for restaurants, franchise and commercial businesses around the USA. Their designs are unique, eye-catching and engaging, which help businesses to attract more customers and increase their sales. They provide easy-to-use digital menu solutions that are customizable according to the business needs. DMS’s goal is to provide affordable digital menu solutions to businesses without compromising on quality.

In conclusion, Digital Menu Solutions is a leader in providing affordable and customizable digital menu solutions to restaurants, franchises and commercial businesses around the USA. With its unique and engaging animated menu designs, DMS is helping businesses to attract more customers and increase their sales. Dan Feliz and his team are dedicated to providing high-quality digital menu solutions without breaking the bank.

With the passing of the global pandemic and amidst a looming threat of economic crisis, people’s attitude toward earning, spending, and managing money has vastly changed. This includes our growing preference for transacting online, which has paved the way for the financial services industry to enter digital exchange and marketplaces.

Unfortunately, building these exchanges and marketplaces from scratch can be a daunting task. Because it would require financial services companies to invest a significant amount of time, resources, and expertise. To add to this concern, the regulatory landscape for exchanges and marketplaces is constantly changing, making it a need for businesses to stay on top of the latest compliance requirements and regulations.

Regardless of the industry, companies that need trading and exchange platforms must face these challenges.

This is a need Exberry has seen and is now addressing through its end-to-end exchange technology solutions. With its cutting-edge platform, Exberry is making it easier for businesses to build and operate exchanges and marketplaces, no matter the industry.

Exberry’s platform can support the trading of these assets and currencies, which helps gamers buy and sell items with ease.

Energy Markets

Energy exchange, particularly carbon off-set markets, can use Exberry’s platform to offer trade energy futures, options, and other derivatives. Much like financial markets, energy exchanges can benefit most from the platform’s advanced matching technology.

Real Estate

As the largest untapped capital in terms of today’s dollar value, real estate exchanges can benefit from Exberry’s platform by providing a trading platform for real estate assets, such as property and land. Various trading scenarios that are needed by real estate exchanges–including auctions and time-based trades–are made possible by the platform. More than this, the platform can also provide real-time market data and analytics that help real estate traders make informed decisions.

Lonch: Meet Christopher Gulliver, the Tech Entrepreneur Revolutionizing the Way We Work

Ask Christopher Gulliver about his background in tech and he’ll tell you he is a serial entrepreneur.

“I really enjoy creating things that solve people’s problems,” he said. “My entire background has been pretty much wholly user focused.”

For the first decade of his career, Christopher worked for some of his favorite entertainment software companies, including Midway Games; id Software; and Disney. IPs he worked on include Marvel, “Toy Story,” Mickey Mouse, Call of Duty, and James Bond.

“You don’t get much more user-focused than video games.” Christopher observed.

In the process, Christopher learned a lot by concentrating as an entrepreneur on what matters most: product creation, development, and delivering the product to market.

“This gave me a front-row seat to see how to build software at scale, with millions of passionate customers,” Christopher said. “I saw what worked, what didn’t, and which technology stacks were used.

“I got to see how communities were managed; how quality was guaranteed; how to run a team into the ground; and how to manage teams effectively without burning them out. I also learned how determined and passionate people can pull off what seems like impossible results.”

This work helped propel the launch of Christopher’s own company, Lonch.

The startup is a social marketplace that generates royalties for users who trade insight, skills, and connections. Lonch provides what amounts to digital office space that serves as a catalyst for global contributors looking to connect and collaborate. Royalties create a democratic and merit-based, collaborative ecosystem that encourages innovation and lowers barriers for all innovators, regardless of their net worth.

“This concept, Lonch, has been something that’s been on my mind over the last 20 years or so, when my brother and I noticed the potential for a platform like this.” Christopher reflected. “I’ve been waiting for the right technologies to come along, and the right opportunity, the right timing to build this thing out. I have put a lot of energy and effort into it.”

The flagship feature of Lonch is its crowd investment platform.

This function allows anyone to contribute skills, create, validate, and launch innovative products with negligible upfront costs. Infrastructure and tools provided to startups reduce risk and uncertainty for democratic policies, tokenization, and federated systems.

Lonch leverages Web3 technologies to build a more traditional Web2 solution. Christopher calls the approach “Web2.5.”

The platform employs a privately provisioned blockchain and smart contracts to tokenize individual user contributions in the form of project-specific royalty tokens. These tokens represent royalties to be paid to the token bearer. Royalty tokens can be sold directly to users and exchanged in a token marketplace.

Christopher’s Web2.5 solution affords the best of both worlds: a distributed source of truth, the security of both a distributed and centralized solution, trust, and transparency. It also provides a springboard to open the gates to Web3. Lonch uses Web3 and AI technology, but is not a blockchain company.

“Yes, we use blockchain,” Christopher said. “But that’s limited to taking the good parts of Web3.”

Future plans for Lonch include a formal launch in 2024. But the release of its first mobile app prototype could come as soon as the end of 2023; with the Lonch web experience to be unveiled later.

The entrepreneurial path that Christopher took to community building can be traced back to when he was a kid, killing time in his parents’ office and finding solace in a typewriter.

“Like any kid, I was always bored,” he said. “So using the typewriter, I tried to figure out how to build a community of people who wanted to join a ninja club. I was big into Ninja Turtles at the time. I didn’t know what I was going to do with it—I was just trying to get people involved. That was one of my first, ‘dipping my toes’ moments in community building.”

Another aspiration Christopher had was to start a company.

“Something that was going to change the world in some meaningful way,” he said.

That’s what led Christopher to develop Lonch, which he says “is kind of a paradigm shift of how we work, how we perceive work as people who are contributing to projects.”

Chris detailed how work right now basically consists of a 9-to-5 job secured after obtaining a college degree.

“You go out into the workspace, you put your time in and you get that paycheck,” he said. “But if you aren’t consistently delivering, then you don’t get that money. Maybe you lose your job, or maybe you are killing it, but the company has a downturn and you still lose your job.

“Lonch is this change in this concept of ownership and risk. We want you to be able to have real value and real ownership of what you’re contributing. And as a result, we also want you to get that back. If you did something and that something had a material impact on the product, then it seems fair that you should get some sort of royalty.”

Christopher also wants to ease the process of launching a startup. Instead of spending time with logistics—filling out paperwork and finding partners and investors—he designed Lonch so accessibility takes priority over everything else.

As far as acquiring tokens is concerned, whoever in the Lonch community pitches in, and earns royalty tokens (think of these as fancy IOUs), will maintain the value of the token—when it increases, for example—even after they stop contributing.

If the product is successful, the individual continues to receive periodic payouts from the royalty tokens held. Conversely, in a traditional business, those paychecks would have stopped when the employee left the company. The Lonch strategy enables people to build investment portfolios based on how they contributed ideas. This enables them to take breaks without worrying about going bankrupt; it gives people freedom.

Lonch also understands that not every startup idea is going to generate a billion dollars. If it generates $5M, and five people worked on it, that’s a solid return of $1M a head. But no product with a $5M lifetime value would ever be funded in the current market.

“We’re changing the way the world does business,” Christopher said. “We’re changing the way we think about that standard process of raising capital. I see Lonch as an off-ramp from traditional business, a paradigm shift that is imminent.

And Christopher sees trust as a critical component of the digital age.

“We want to take the parts of Web3 that solve real problems,” he said, “and bring them into our platform, so we have that transparency, the ability to audit the system and make sure that everything is on the up-and-up. Unlike any other social platform, we also validate that the users are who they say they are.”

Lonch is building its early adopter community by incentivizing the recruitment of the first 150,000 validated users through an affiliate bounty program. That program is potentially worth up to $30M over the next 10 years.

“The community is the biggest part here,” Christopher said. “Everything we’ve pitched is a tool to enable people who can connect and work together.

“But we need to get those people, who believe in our vision, to join our platform. Just like everything else on Lonch, it’s the community that does the hard work and we believe they should see rewards proportional to their contributions.”
