According to a statement released by the company on Thursday, McDonald’s will be bringing testing of its McPlant burger to 600 locations in the San Francisco Bay and Dallas-Fort Worth areas starting February 14.
The McPlant burger consists of a patty developed in partnership with BeyondMeat that’s served on a sesame seed bun with lettuce, tomato, onions, and American cheese, and topped with ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard.
Plant-based burgers have been introduced in several fast-food joints, and McDonald’s take on it was first introduced last November at eight US restaurants in California, Iowa, Louisiana and Texas. Before its arrival in the US, the McPlant burger was introduced overseas in Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden and the UK.
Burger King launched its Impossible Whopper, an iteration of their iconic Whopper burger but with a plant-based patty, in August 2019. KFC also launched a plant-based Beyond Fried Chicken nationwide for a limited time. According to a press release, the company was the first fast-food restaurant in the US to introduce plant-based chicken when it launched the first version of Beyond Fried Chicken in August 2019.
In the first week of January, Chipotle added plant-based chorizo to menus across the country. The chorizo is combined with chipotle peppers, tomato paste and paprika. The product is free of preservatives, grains, gluten, and soy.
