But how can cryptocurrency make the world a better place? By giving ordinary people more power and influence to support and fund potentially planet-saving ideas, from green tech to carbon capture to climate justice.
“There have been COP conferences every year since 1995. And every year carbon emissions have continued to rise. So we thought it was time for a new approach,” says Alex Vergara, Community and Communications Lead at Earth Fund. “Instead of waiting for world leaders to agree on kick-the-can targets or hoping that a billionaire will save us, we thought we’d build all the tools a global community of people need to work together to tackle the climate crisis and get rewarded for their efforts.”
Building the tools people need to fight climate change
Earth Fund DAO doesn’t just give everybody with a 1Earth token an online community to discuss and coordinate climate responses, it also gives them control over the Earth Fund treasury to fund planet-saving projects.
“There are three things we really need to tackle climate change” Vergara added. “We need an engaged community of passionate people, the tools to coordinate, collaborate and achieve consensus, and the money to make change happen. We’ve built the tools for collaboration and a treasury for change and the 1Earth token is the final piece of the puzzle: it lets passionate people join the community and use those things to address the biggest challenges humanity faces.”
When they join the online community, users can join sub-communities dedicated to causes they’re passionate about and vote on what projects deserve the funding they need to make a difference.
They’ll also be able to earn crypto tokens as a reward for their involvement and active participation in making the world a better place.
Giving the community access to climate experts
Earth Fund is also aware that there’s a fourth piece of the puzzle when it comes to tackling climate change: following the science. That’s why they’ve hired a climate scientist to advise their community on how to find the projects that can have the biggest impact.
Lucy Tweed Ph.D., Earth Fund’s resident climate scientist and former climate change researcher at Columbia University, has joined the team to be on hand for advice, support and to decipher the climate science.
“My role is to help the Earth Fund DAO find the projects around the world that can make the biggest impact.” Tweed said. “Climate science can get confusing — there are lots of calculations and confusing terms — so I’ll be on hand to help the DAO make sense of it so they can make sure the treasury makes the biggest difference possible.”
Looking forward to launch, Vergara added: “I’ve said it before, but having somebody like Lucy — a bonafide expert in all things climate change — on the team is such a huge step for us. It gives Earth Fund the chance to become the platonic ideal for how everybody — including governments — can work together to fight climate change: follow the science, vote transparently and democratically, prevent any outside influence, and fund the worthiest projects that can make the biggest impact.”
