In a speech this weekend, Prince William called on citizens to protect and restore our planet. His words were filled with urgency as he noted that time was running out.
Last Saturday in London, the prince delivered the speech during Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. He talked about how progress has been linked to environmental degradation over the century.
“In that time, mankind has benefited from unimaginable technological developments and scientific breakthroughs,” he recalls.
“And although those breakthroughs have increased our awareness of the impact humans have on our world, our planet has become more fragile.”
“Today, in 2022, as the queen celebrates her Platinum Jubilee, the pressing need to protect and restore our planet has never been more urgent,” the prince added.
The Duke of Cambridge has also supported the prince’s call to protect and preserve the environment, saying that it is now the “top global agenda.”
In addition, the duke highlighted the importance of the younger generation in tackling issues concerning the environment.
The speech by Prince William is not new as he has always expressed opinions regarding environmental issues like the link between nature and climate change in April 2021 and the issue of space tourism in October.
With environmental destruction being a huge problem around the world, it makes sense that William would want to take action. Fossil fuels are guilty of much of the damage. However, many nations are still sticking to the burning of fossil fuels for energy.
The recent CO2 emissions from energy production are at an all-time high. The International Energy Agency recorded over 36 billion metric tons of global carbon dioxide emissions, breaking past records.
Prince William says that people are the solution to any problem and that when people together find a way through the obstacle, any problem will be solved.
“Together, if we harness the very best of humankind and restore our planet, we will protect it for our children, for our grandchildren and for future generations to come.”
“They will be able to say with pride at what’s been achieved: ‘What a wonderful world.'”
