For a long time, President Donald Trump had denied that he had business interests in Russia during the 2016 election. But new revelations from his former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen proves otherwise.
After the new revelations, President Trump called Cohen a liar and a weak person. He said that Cohen was lying when Cohen pled guilty to lying about a real estate deal to build a Trump Tower in Russia.
Trump was identified as “Individual 1” in court documents that followed the admission by Michael Cohen. Trump didn’t want to reveal further information about the alleged real estate project during the 2016 Presidential campaign.
Trump failed to disclose the fact that the Trump Organization had started negotiations for the property known as the Moscow Project. Documents filed on Thursday presented evidence that conflicts with denials by Donald Trump on his financial dealings with Russia. Trump had also repeatedly played down his campaign contacts with Russian officials.
As Trump’s presidential campaign became more popular in June 2016, Michael Cohen pursued the project further. Michael Cohen joined the Trump Organization as a special counsel in 2007, and he became an executive vice president of the organization. He became a frequent public speaker for the campaign.
The special counsel had an account of efforts by the Trump Organization to build a tower in Moscow based on the newly revealed information by Michael Cohen.
The charges show that the Moscow Project was discussed multiple times and did not end in January 2016 as earlier stated. Discussions continued till as late as June 2016 and efforts were discussed on getting the approval of the Russian government for the project. Michael Cohen allegedly explained to Trump more than three times and family members of Trump were briefed about the plan.
Since 2016, Trump has denied that he had any dealings, business or investments with Russia. Trump never disclosed that he had pursued the deal when he was running for president. He said the closest he ever came to Russia was a mansion that he sold to a Russian billionaire in 2008.
For over three decades, Trump had continually sought business opportunities in Russia. Trump said that there were no phone calls or talking to Russia, but Michael Cohen has admitted that he had called the assistant to the Russian President’s spokesman at a phone number based in Russia. Michael Cohen spoke with contacts about the tower.
Trump had denied that anyone on his campaign spoke with Russia at least six times. But he later said that aides that had contact with Russia as low-level aides or briefly employed aides.
Mr. Trump said that his former national adviser, Michael T. Flynn was dealing with Russia. He said that he knew of no one else apart from Flynn.
The charges said that Michael Cohen agreed to travel to Russia in connection with the Tower project and took steps ahead of a possible Trump trip to Russia. Cohen went to Prague, but there is no conclusive proof that he went to Prague on Trump’s behalf. But Cohen asked Trump about the possibility of Trump himself traveling to Russia in connection to the Russian Project.
