A lot of kids are dying from air pollution, but the Trump Administration does not care. The Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Andrew Wheeler came up with a proposal to stop the Clean Power Plan of Obama. This plan sets federal limits to carbon pollution from power plants.
Air pollution is affecting a lot of kids, and these kids suffer from asthma. A lot of them were rushed to the hospital because they could hardly breathe. Many were treated successfully, but some have lost their lives. Some of these kids have been rushed to the hospital too many times that they can’t even count the number of times that they had been in the hospital due to an attack.
These attacks are largely caused by the poor quality of air. Air quality must be improved for these kids to live a healthy life. A large number of these cases can be prevented with cleaner air. Unfortunately, the EPA doesn’t seem to care. The new Administrator plans came up with a new Affordable Clean Energy Rule that doesn’t place any limit on how many tons of carbon that coal-fired plants can emit. They plan to make these plants more efficient without explicitly stating how much carbon they can emit. But pollution will increase if these plants were to improve their efficiency.
The EPA plans to allow old coal plants to continue operating and allow more dangerous air to be emitted thus putting people at risk. This will harm over 26 million American including 6 million children that have asthma. This could lead to thousands of missed school days, 1,400 premature deaths and more asthma exacerbations. There will be more children rushing to the emergency room with bulging eyes and heaving chests struggling for breaths of air. Doctors will do their best and try to save every life, but there will be that odd child that doctors will fail to open his/her airway. The EPA policy will lead to avoidable deaths.
The plan hasn’t been made final, and the official rule will likely come out in mid to late 2019. The EPA must consider the opinions of the American Lung Association and the Physicians for Social Responsibility.
The amounts of pollutants in the air will increase and the progress to cleaner, safer energy will reduce. Thousands of lives will be lost. The Federal Government must understand this. At the state and local levels, we must push our leaders to put clean energy policies and stronger climate laws in place.
Wheeler who is the Administrator of the EPA heads an agency whose motto is to protect human health and the environment. But unfortunately, the EPA doesn’t seem to be bothering about going by its motto these days.
We deserve an EPA that is truly concerned about protecting the environment and not making things worse. Climate and health protection plans must be made stronger and not dismantled. Lives should be the priority and not industrial gain.
