Proper diet and nutrition are essential in a child’s development. Having the right proportion and variety of food in every meal is something every parent works hard to give to their kids. Sadly, achieving a healthfuller palette for the younger ones is a continuing struggle, especially with the availability of junk food and strong peer influence.
Jamara Griffin, a budding writer with a public health background, aspires to educate both the youth and adults on the importance of proper nutrition through her book, Healthy Adventures with Kayla.
Jamara Griffin is a 22-year-old actress from Philadelphia with a degree in Public Health from West Chester University. She is first an artist who has appeared in many films, commercials, and theater. She is known for the character “Iris” from the movie “Night Catches Us,” starring Kerry Washington and Anthony Mackie. Despite her massive interest in the performing arts, she developed another passion for writing.
Currently, she has obtained strong enthusiasm for the health of children. It comes as a consequence of her medical condition and her schooling. As early as eight years old, Jamara was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Somehow, it influenced her to study public health for four years in college. As a recent graduate, she realized that the world needs more health educators, especially for the children. As cliche as it may sound, taking care of our youth today is vital because they are our future. Jamara is aware that obesity and other chronic diseases occur and continue to emerge among the younger population. This alarming change is due to adjustments in this demographic’s behavior and environment.
A kid’s food preference is strongly influenced by what their parents and peers eat. Unfortunately, most are uneducated on the fact that eating two bags of chips and ice cream a day can lead to obesity and diabetes. Jamara shares that her interest in educating children on health inspired her to write a children’s book entitled, Healthy Adventures with Kayla.
This piece of literature is about a young health advocate, Kayla, who speaks on the importance of health. Jamara hopes that the character she created in Kayla will serve as an excellent example that kids can follow. Moreover, she aspires that her book will arouse more to become health advocates! But with her having a performing arts background, she ultimately dreams for her authored work to be adapted as a children’s TV show. Students can, thus, be entertained while at the same time, learn about nutrition and health.
Although Healthy Adventures with Kayla is essentially a reading material, Jamara shares that it is also a recipe book; selected healthy foods along with their ingredients and procedures for cooking are subtly incorporated for the young to see. Hopefully, they can learn how to make healthy snacks through the recipes.
In this written piece of work, Jamara wants her readers to be children, parents, families, teachers, actors, and other people working in children’s tv companies. So far, this project has been a unique family effort with Jamara’s brother, Jared, as the illustrator of the book. Together they share her passion for writing and his love for drawing.
Finding the right tools to be educated on the proper nutrition for our kids need not be bookish and all-academic. Jamara’s book is a tremendous and timely effort to inform a younger audience, especially visual learners like children. She has even made it bilingual and accessible in an ebook version. Her paperback is now available at more than 2500 websites.
