Yessenia Cossio is a bundle of multiple abilities who is passionate about many things. With her ultimate dream of landing an acting role at a major film studio still in place, she is currently gearing toward that dream by becoming one of Hollywood’s best stuntwomen. Born Yessenia Cossio-Alonso to Cuban immigrant parents, Yessenia’s interest in the arts came alive when she was only nine years old. Her dream was to become a musician, so she started by joining singing classes at her school and church. She loved singing and was at it for a few years, but she never felt complete. In 2006, she got the answer she was looking for when she performed a dialogue script in her English class about women’s rights. Her classmates enjoyed the performance, and that was the defining moment for Yessenia Cossio that told her acting was her true love.
Her next move was to get into an acting school, but she couldn’t afford one at the time. She started working at a telemarketing company as a computer technical support specialist to save money toward her training. By the time she was 18, Yessenia was promoted to human resources, and at that time, she started looking for a side job to complement her income. It was hard balancing two jobs and making it to her acting classes and auditions. She took up a few jobs hoping to strike a balance, and for seven years, she worked in medical billing at Best Buy, as a Kitchen Appliance salesperson at Cutco, and as a special events dancer. None of these jobs gave her the balance she sought, and she didn’t make the breakthrough she desired in acting. After all that time, she finally decided to quit and pursue acting fully.
On her journey to getting into Hollywood, her resolve to go into filmmaking was strengthened while working at Best Buy. “I was watching The Avengers in action playing on one of the tv’s on a loop and telling myself, “One day, I will work for Marvel. Six years later, I worked for Marvel in the Netflix Marvel TV show, “The Punisher,” she narrates.
In January 2013, she joined The Miami Acting Studio, and that’s where things began to take shape for her. Yessenia always gives The Miami Acting Studio credit for changing her life. In August of the same year, she started fitness training, after which she started doing it competitively. She came 16th in her first competition and came 2nd in her second. She finally got a shot at stunt acting in December 2013 and did her first shootout stunt in January 2014. From that point, she started training in other areas like martial arts, wirework, high falls, stage combat, acrobatics, parkour, tricking, trapeze, stunt driving, etc.
Since Yessenia Cossio got her foot into the stunt business, she has played some roles on TV, such as the FOX TV show Ultimate Tag (2019), in which she played “Dynamite,” as an athlete and actor. To keep her dream going, she also moved to Los Angeles, California, and has more TV series and movies to her credit, such as Marvel’s hit TV show, The Punisher, CBS TV’s McGyver, US Network’s Queen of the South, the movie Dune, and a host of others. Yessenia isn’t quite where she wants to be. Still, as she keeps working, she is an active player in community outreaches such as dressing as superheroes to children’s hospitals, homeless shelters, and elderly homes. She has donated financially to causes like autism, cancer, homelessness, epidermolysis bullosa, and many more.
Yessenia Cossio’s goal is to transition from stuntwoman to actor and land herself a major acting role that will cement her place in Hollywood. She wants to make more impact as an icon on screen than behind the scenes, and she believes that her current journey will get her to that point. Yessenia Cossio is a brand in the works, and she puts in the work daily to prove to the world that no dream is too big as long as one is ready to work for it.
