Rising artist Lil Jsean became a viral sensation in 2016 with his hit single “Trust ‘Em” viewed more than 3,000,000 times on Twitter and more than 1,000,000 views on Youtube. Today, he is back in the game with his recently released music video, “Perfect Vision/Spike Lee.”
More popularly known as Lil Jsean, J. Sean Essix is an independent American rapper operating at the same level as major labels. Born in Alabama, he is now based in Woodlands, Texas, where he continues to pursue his dreams in the music industry alongside his sister that is a R&B artist, Aesja.
The passing of his older brother Dougie in 2010 fueled his passion for music. The painful loss served as his inspiration to develop and pursue his talent in hip-hop music. In 2012, Lil Jsean first created a music video dedicated to his high school basketball team for finishing the season undefeated. The music video and song “#CPNATION” quickly became viral. This was then followed by his decision to join a talent show at Blinn College, where he emerged as the winner.
By 2013, he released a mixtape called “Flight,” and in 2014, he dropped two EPs, “Black Friday” and “Yellow Tape.” He hit the headlines again when famous MMA fighter Brennan Ward used his song “Winner’s Circle” as an official walkout song. From then on, he has been featured in several media outlets, interviews, and live performances. He was featured in the Houston Press and appeared on Great Day Houston and CW39’s Eye Opener TV.
Lil Jsean has opened for chart-topping and record-breaking hip-hop artists such as Waka Flocka, Riff Raff, and Nipsey Hussle. The talented hip-hop star had also performed in West Virginia University’s Spring Fling in 2016. He has recently collaborated with Kanye West’s artist Cyhi The Prince for his new song “Long Damn Time.”
In 2016, his song “Trust ‘Em,” which also featured his younger sister Aesja, became a hit gaining almost 5,000,000 views across different platforms.
The rising rapper opened the month of September with a new hit song and music video “Perfect Vision/Spike Lee” on Youtube. His latest song serves as a 90s throwback as it pays homage to the 1991 Nike commercial featuring Spike Lee and Michael Jordan. He gives his listeners and viewers a nostalgic trip down to memory lane while incorporating a modern twist in it.
Lil Jsean points out that the whole theme of his new song revolves around a vital message addressed to independent artists like him. “You don’t need a major record label to achieve a big project,” he points out. Indeed, he serves as a perfect embodiment of this motivational message as this independent artist several times without being signed in any label. He hopes to inspire more aspiring artists to pursue their dreams despite being independent. It is important to remember that in the music industry, true talent shines even without a label.
