Hunter Powell Goes from High School DJ to R&B/Soul Producer, Singer, Songwriter

Singer, songwriter, and producer Hunter Powell uses concise language to describe his creative process: “I make beats, then I sing on them!” This short statement appears as the artist’s bio on multiple platforms like his Spotify page and Instagram account. The simplicity and briefness of that explanation is an accurate expression of how he comes up with his R&B/Soul music that is driven by catchy, electronic beats. Hunter’s creative process and style call to mind his beginnings in the music industry as a disc jockey. With his experience as a DJ, he produces music with rich layers of vocals and production that reflect the multiple facets of complex human emotions and life as a young adult.

It is also perhaps this background that has helped Hunter develop his understanding of the powerful exchange between music and visual media. His vision has allowed him to create holistic, multimedia experiences for his audience. He is known for releasing elaborate music videos, striking graphics, and animated content to complement his songs – all in his characteristic stylishness and distinct artistry.

Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Hunter was primarily raised by his mother, Cathleen Powell. His father, Mark Griffin, passed away when the artist was at the age of eight. He attended The Wellington School in Upper Arlington, Ohio until his graduation in 2014. It was during his freshman year of high school that he started his music career as a DJ. After four years of playing other people’s songs, Hunter realized that he wanted more out of music. In his senior year of high school, he used the money he made DJing to purchase a home recording studio.

In October 2013, Hunter released his first song “Can’t Sleep” while still DJing on the side. The people’s reaction that he received for his music convinced him that he could pursue a career in the industry. He slowly turned away from being a DJ and centered his efforts on becoming a singer, songwriter, and producer. He attended college at Wittenberg to study music but dropped out after one semester to pursue music full time. In 2017, he created Hunter Powell Music LLC and hired Mikhail Randall as his manager. Hunter released “Distractions” in October 2018, his debut album that he completely wrote and produced himself. On August 23, 2019, he released his sophomore album “Brain Broke,” once again completely produced and written by himself.

Hunter continues to create authentic music coming from real-life situations. Usually producing everything himself, he is currently involved in a project produced by multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated producer Bkorn.
