On Sunday, The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman announced at SXSW that the dark comic book series will return for season 3 on Wednesday, June 22.
Blackman also revealed a first look at the new season with a teaser trailer that compels the Umbrella Academy’s Hargreeves siblings to confront alternate versions of the superheroes named the Sparrow Academy.
Season 3 begins at the season 2 finale, where the Umbrella Academy returns home to the present after stopping the apocalypse in 1963. At first, they believe that they’ve saved the timeline and the world, but they quickly realize that things are different as they meet the Sparrows and learn that they are in the Sparrow Academy timeline. The Sparrows, led by their long-dead brother Ben (Justin H. Min), are described as “smart, stylish, and about as warm as a sea of icebergs”—not very welcoming to their alternate timeline counterparts.
But this initial face-off between the two turns out to be the bottom of the barrel in everyone’s problems as they navigate through challenges, losses, and surprises due to an unknown destructive entity wreaking havoc in the universe. It is believed that they might have caused this, and The Umbrella Academy will have to try their best to convince their father’s (Colm Feore) new family to help correct their mistakes and send them back to their own timeline before things worsen.
Season 3 will see a return of stars Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Min, Feore, and Ritu Arya, alongside new cast members Justin Cornwell, Britne Oldford, Jake Epstein, Genesis Rodriguez, Cazzie David, and Javon “Wanna” Walton.
The Umbrella Academy adaptation is based on the comic series created by creators and co-executive producers Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) and Gabriel Bá (Daytripper).
