When she discovered her son’s addiction years ago, Barbara Decker felt like she had failed as a mother. She questioned the legitimacy of her parenting skills. How could she have missed all the signs? Now, Barbara uses her Love Another Way approach to help parents of adult children with substance use disorders engage in a different way.
Barbara Decker is all too familiar with the pain of seeing a child fall into addiction again and again. For years, she tried to help her son Eric quit drugs and live a clean life. She read books, did research, and talked to experts. Nothing she did ever got through to Eric, and her attempts only pushed her away from him.
Desperate for help, she pleaded with a behavioral therapist for help. What he told her completely changed her approach to her son’s addiction: “There’s nothing you can do that will help your son. Only he can choose recovery.” After this realization, Barbara started improving herself. It seemed counterproductive at first, but what she discovered changed hers and Eric’s life. Barbara is proud to say that Eric has now been sober for over two years with no relapses. Eric himself says that the Love Another Way approach Barbara used is what encouraged him to choose recovery.
Barbara Decker assembled all the hard lessons she learned around how to Love Another Way and built a program, The Transformative Boundaries Experience, specifically to help other parents respond differently to their children’s addictions. In May 2019, she started with a small beta group. The results were astounding. She now has over 100 students who have used her methods to achieve heartwarming success.
The Transformative Boundaries Experience promotes a one-of-a-kind approach to dealing with a child’s substance abuse disorder. The program teaches parents how to set Transformative Boundaries, which Barbara believes are essential in maintaining a healthy relationship while coping with addiction. Mothers who have reached out to Barbara have improved their lives while also helping their children choose recovery. Barbara’s Transformative Boundaries helps the mother-child relationship thrive, and parents learn the best ways to interact with, support, and encourage their adult children to overcome their addiction-based challenges. Her efforts have helped families restore peace in their homes and in their minds. The heartwarming testimonials the program receives are part of the reason why she wants to share her program far and wide.
