Fostering Art With a Heart: Galiatea’s Socially Conscious “Heart in Art” Initiative

The soul of culture lies in artisan crafts – this is what Galiatea believes, and it has made it the company’s goal to let these cultures be known to the world.

With six years of design experience, the company has become a role model for unique, artisan items for any space. The furniture and home decor design company’s drive to give back to its artists gave birth to the “Heart in Art” initiative.

As a response to the world’s increase in mass production, Galiatea’s “Heart in Art” fund was launched. Moreover, the company saw the need to bring awareness to communities that have been marginalized and wanted to bring appreciation for their craftsmanship skills. They committed to donating 10% of their profit to bridge education and infrastructure gaps in their artisans’ communities.

Established in 2014, Galiatea was built with diversity, connection, and social impact in mind. The name Galiatea is derived from the mythical muse of art Galatea, created by Pygmalion as the “perfect woman,” and the word Gaia which signifies “mother of the earth.”

Representing previously underrepresented artisans from Peru, Brazil, Turkey, Nepal, Cambodia, Uganda, Rwanda, and Laos, it has grown into a trusted brand of lasting elegance and unique craftsmanship. The craftsmanship techniques, inherited by its artisans from their ancestors, ensure that every single product they put out is unique and handmade.

True to its founding values, Galiatea is making efforts to minimize their environmental footprint. The company reduced the amount of stock they have, making all of their items limited edition production or made to order and custom. Their pieces carry Galiatea’s intention to pave the path to increased social consciousness, one handmade product at a time.

To further ensure exceptional quality and commitment to their environmental footprint reduction, the company locally sources one of a kind, exotic materials in the communities where their artisans are located. They carefully procure these raw materials to guarantee that they leave no negative impact on the environment. Their in-house design team then fashions a product using up to date trends and contemporary design styles combined with the traditional techniques of the artisans.

Galiatea’s custom furniture and home decor pieces, once available only to trade professionals, are now up on their relaunched new website – inviting everyone to be a part of the “Heart in Art” initiative. For product order specificities, communication with their in-house designers are welcome and encouraged. Their website not only serves as an e-commerce platform but also one to educate designers and the masses regarding the cultures of their artisans’ communities.

It gives light to the situation in its artisans’ communities through furniture and fixtures made from traditional craftsmanship techniques. Galiatea’s authentic handmade pieces reflect the culture and tell the stories of the responsible artisan. Their line up of items spreads awareness of the plight of marginalized communities. Galiatea hopes to expand their diverse representation and further their “Heart in Art” initiative so that it will support artisans from all over the world.

The company not only brings awareness to the communities of their artisans but also encourages its reach to give back. Buy pieces that last generations and build homes for countless communities through Galiatea.
